Logitech MediaPlay Cordless Mouse Support?
« on: November 14, 2004, 01:21:39 am »

It's a dealbreaker. I've been experimenting with how Media Center responds to my mouse and how much control i have over playback and navigation. I'll tell you now... it is limited and somewhat buggy, but i would love to know if anyone else has tried this particular combination with any success.

Thanks in advance,

I have a Logitech cordless optical mouse and it works great with MC.  However, I also have a Logitech cordless iTouch keyboard and have found it to be a real PITA if you use the iTouch software.  Since I removed iTouch and ran the keyboard on native windows drivers everything has been much more stable.

In my experience there is little point in reporting it to Logitech as they are just not interested.  I think that comment was Jim's way of defending MC.

I am guessing you're referring to the play, pause, stop, etc. buttons at the top of your keyboard? The ones who create that goofy onscreen overlay proclaiming "PLAY", "PAUSE" or what have you if you have iTouch installed?

Thanks for responding, btw, both of you

Virgility, how did you get the MediaPlay to interact with Media Center?  I'm using v10.0.173 and only the system volume works (as expected).  I'd be happy with the Play/Pause working too - are you able to do that?  Thanks for any info!!

I've posted a message on Logitech's forum looking for info on working with Media Center.

Haven't had any luck, actually. All i was able to do is set the mappable buttons to keystrokes recognized by media center.

That's all i have to offer :) Though, if you have any future surprises, feel free to share!

Yeah, that's not a bad way to do it I guess.  Pity only some of the buttons can be assigned/mapped - and they only work when the application (Media Center) has focus - which is not much use.

Let's see what the Logitech guys say ...

Thanks for the quick reply!!!

No problem! And yes, i agree with you fully about the app focus problem. Kinda irks me though since one of the reasons i got the mouse is the fact that logitech claims it "Works with JRiver Media Center" when in fact it's actually less functional than my MX1000 with all of its buttons completely remapped

Where did you see Logitech claim compatibility with Media Center?  If they said that somewhere, geez, you'd think it would at least recognize that I have Media Center installed on my system - doesn't even give me an option to tell it!!  All I have available are Windows Media Player, iTunes and dBpower Amp.  >:(

I'd hafta hunt it down again. I distinctly remember wandering through their site and finding compatibility claims for both the MediaPlay mouse and one of the iterations of the Harmony remote. Considering that the cheapest (and not the compatible) Harmony remote costs 4x what the mouse does, I opted for the mouse :)

Hi all,

Allow me to re-up this post to see if someone has something new to share.

I've just bought this sexy-looking mouse from Logitech and I'm sad to see it can't interact with MC.
I've tried it in Theater View and nothing work at all.  :'(

The "Media Center" that comes with the mouse is, well, too simple and not fun to use.

The Mouse is compatible with MS Media Player, a joke, Winamp, no Theater mode, and other apps I don't like.

So being able to use it with MC would be terrific.

Thanks

I posted about this in Logitech's forum last December, and got this reply at that time:

"Logitech does not support the product you want to use.
Should it work, fine. Should there be issues, we still will not support the JRiver Media Center"

Bummer!!

Patrak,
Try searching here for Logitech.  Also check the FAQ near the top of this board.  People have had success with the Logitech keyboards by uninstalling some of the Logitech software.  It may work for the mouse, too.

Also, keep telling Logitech you want MC support.

I've searched the forum and found a simple solution to make the Play/Pause/Next/Previous buttons to work, even if MC hasn't the focus.

That's a nice improvement  :D

Unfortunately in Theater View nothing wotks, not even the scroll wheel.  :'(

I'm gonna ask the Logitech Support then, and add my name to the long list of MC users. Who knows.

Btw, as this is my first appearance on this forum, I'd like to thank all the crew working on this software.
I've tried a lot of music players and MC simply tops them all.
Brilliant !!!

The solution is here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=18259.0

- You have to edit the Registry and add two keys with string values.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Media Jukebox.exe]
Default="C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Media Jukebox.exe"
Path="C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Media Center]
Path="C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center"
Default=C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Media Jukebox.exe"

- Edit the player.ini file (save it before) and add

in [Players] section
MC10=wac,Media Jukebox.exe,MJFrame,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,0,1,Media Center

in [Players.Run]
MC10=reg,HKLM,SOFTWARE\Classes\MediaJukebox.File\DefaultIcon,,2

and in [Players.Display]
MC10=Media Center

Now, when you run SetPoint, Media Center will appear in the list of supported apps and will be launched when you press the media key on your mouse.
Unfortunately when you press the media key again, MC won't minimize automatically.

Have fun.

Thanks for the info, Patrak!  I applied the settings as you pointed out (with a few modifications as needed for MC11) and the MediaPlay mouse now launces MC11 with the press of the Media key.

Don't the Play/Pause/Next/Prev track buttons work too?  I can't get them to, wonder if anyone else had luck with this?

The Play/Pause/Next/Prev buttons work with version 10.

Actually I think the most important settings are in this line :

MC10=wac,Media Jukebox.exe,MJFrame,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,0,1,Media Center

The xxx correspond to  ndCaption,xxx,play_delayplay,pause,stop,prev,next

I thought those xxx had to be replaced by some codes related to the mouse but
it worked that way.

Maybe with version 11, something has changed.

Im not an expert, I'm just discovering things one after another.  ;)
So help is still needed, that's true.
