We'd like to release MC11....so.... bad bugs?
« on: March 26, 2005, 09:26:13 am »

We're getting close to closing down MC11.0.  Please post your BIG BAD BUGS here.

No little ones please.  Only show stoppers that would affect most people.

Example of a show stopper:
Conversion won't work when uploading to a handheld device

Examples of ones that may not get fixed at this time:
Third party plug-in problems with FLAC.
Tagging problems with CUE files.

Please report Portable Device problems on that board:

iPOD support - MC transfers files to iPOD where the filename is greater than 31 characters so iPOD can't play them.

 Media Center 11 DSP BUG:

192kHz/32bit playback ...CPU hovers at 60%

MC10 same playback hovers at 0% w/ spikes up to 12 every three seconds.

Wavelab playback @32/192 has same very low cpu usage as MC10.

This obviously makes MC11 rather sluggish for me and hurts ASIO buffering and performance; it's working ....just took more tweaking than usual and I am still getting some pauses before crossfades now & then.

thanks

I have been having a problem with tracks pausing/stumbling for about a half a second about 6 or 7 seconds before they end.  Read here for more details: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26256.0

Visi studio covers the visi screen up when it opens - not sure that would be considered major though.

Opening
a) by default bottom left, covering the action panel, and in smaller size
b) where it was moved to last time
would be ideal

From the Library Browser, select an Artist, then right-click on an Album icon and select "Delete..." -- immediate crash. Still present in 11.0.225, XP SP2.

Today I had problems playing a .mov file. It stopped at the same position twice.

The iPod experience could be shined up too.

I think that's a feature. MC is using an ASIO engine which supposedly make quite a perfect output but takes op a lot of CPU.

Am I the only one that has playback stop a couple seconds before the end of the 1st song?

It happens every time playback has stopped, whether by the stop button, the pause button, or if Playing Now runs out of songs.  If I then add songs to Playing Now or hit Play after a Pause or Stop, it will play to just shy of the end of the song then stop playback.

The timeline indicator continues on to the end and the next song title comes up on the display, but no audio and the timeline indicator stays at the start position.  If I hit Pause and then Play the audio from the last couple seconds of song one plays the rest of the way and everything works normal from there.  Unless I Stop, Pause or run out of songs.

Library server does not seem to be serving Cover Art to G-Force visualization.

iPod sync still broken for me - free space calculation is wrong.

I've had some playback problems with video (mostly XviD/DivX AVIs, MPEG-1/2s, and MP4s) playing from a network share with recent builds.

Sporadically, playback will freeze followed shortly by a complete freeze of the MC UI.  If I'm patient and don't quit out with the task manager, within about a minute MC unfreezes and reports that it couldn't play any of the files in the playlist.  Windows then reports that my network drive has gone "offline", though is available immediately for reconnect.

What I suspect is happening is that a packet or two is slow in coming through to MC when the file is being "sent" via the network.  MC chokes.

This was not a problem with MC10 (with the same computer configuration) and is still a problem now that I've upgraded to a Gigabit switched network (with a nice switch).  Unless it is just me having problems, I would say it is a serious problem because with the large storage needs of media libraries, many people will want to use NAS solutions for their media.  I don't profess to understand how it works, but is there some way that MC could buffer playback of video much like it does for audio?  I am reasonably sure that this would solve my video playback problems (as I have not had it happen with audio files -- even huge ones).

My randomly crashes when returing from theater view to normal (mega-me) view during playback of Mp3s, using the exit-button of theater view which leads to fullscreen no problem at all.

ONLY direct jumping from theater to mega-me crashes MC randomly.

Thanks

MC does not always terminate properly.  If you exit the application and try to re-start later you can't.  What I've found hapening is that the MC process is still active as reported by the task manager.  I've posted this one before:

MC process does not terminate after using my media player.

It terminates OK under other conditions (media player is not used but a UPnP connection is established, media player not active with UPnP server started, UPnP server not started)

When the process doesn't terminate, it's visible in the Process tab of Task Manager, but not in the Applications tab.

I haven't tried to verify this exact behavior in the latest release, but I have seen it a number of times.

As mentioned before, MC is not showing vizualisation when starting in Theater Mode. This bug is also valid for the new "Half-Screen" View in Playback-View of Theater-Mode.

I have 2 problems with build 225

first problem: library server won't start:
03/29/05 16:06:07 - Starting...
03/29/05 16:06:07 - Starting Auto Detect beacon
03/29/05 16:06:07 - Failed to start sharing
(no further information)
then when stopping server again, MC chrashes.
Also, no way of choosing what library to share (maby removed?) in options.

second problem: music files encoded with nero to MP4 format can't be analyzed
errorinformation: The last several files have caused errors. Processing has been halted.

Win2k server, files on a network drive

An interesting finding. I copied the server part of your problem and moved my answer to the latest Library Server thread, since this needs further discussion: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26487.msg185581#msg185581

[More on the problem listed above]

I have been trying to see where the tagging goes wrong and replicate the problem.
It appears that if a track has been played and is still “bolded”, writing tagging changes corrupts the tagging information in that particular file.

For example, if you are editing a genre, you’d double click the album to start playing.  Then press stop (although you shouldn’t really have to). Edit the genre for the album and as soon as the album loses focus, the tags are updated.

Within MC all appears fine, but looking at the MP3 files through another player, the first file ( the one that was being listened to ) is corrupted.

With my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra (30 GB), whenever I sync and there are doubles of a file, it continuosly asks me what I would like to do with the double (even when I have the "do this everytime" box checked).

Other than that, sometimes when I doubleclick on a file inside of Explorer, it doesn't play, but MC opens.

This has gotten drastically worse with the latest (.231) build.  Now, the MC UI is not unfreezing eventually and I am forced to "End Task" out of it.  In one case, repeatedly "End Task-ing" the running MC Application didn't work and I was forced to End Process on the Media Center.exe process.  I then got the "offline" notification as before but was able to immediately reconnect.  In another, I was able to "unstick" Media Center by disabling my network connection (I tested the connection while MC was frozen before disconnecting and I was able to ping the remote machine sucessfully and repeatedly - 50 ping test).  It is possible that my network may have hiccuped momentarily (though I have no evidence of this other than MC freezing) but if so, MC should really recover more gracefully (reporting the playback error or something)!

I have also done some testing and I am not seeing this problem using WiMP (Windows MP), Quicktime Pro, or Media Player Classic.  I have recently been paying attention to the file type, and have only seen this occur with AVI files (most of which are encoded with the XviD codec).

2. Highlighting multiple files for tag editing by dragging a box and highlight enough files so the window scrolls downward, you get tag changes on files above where you started (and thus did intend to change). This can really screw you up since it edits tags out of view of the user.

3. Library Browser is not fully functional to users with high screen resolutions and fonts bigger than standard 8 type. The Subtext links like Albums, Files, etc.  is not viewable; really removes the functionality of the Library browser unfortunately.

This one is an example of a minor problem that will be fixed later.
I think the 31 character problem should be considered a bad bug.  This is what I found when I looked at my filenames:

Tracks on iPOD = 3277
Tracks too long with naming rule of [Track #] - [Name] - [Artist] = 1071  (32%)
Tracks too long with naming rule of [Track #]-[Name] = 407 (12.5%)

Most iPOD users who encounter this problem will have no idea why vast numbers of files transferred via MC do not play on their iPOD.  It doesn't matter to me since I have a workaround but I think it could look bad on MC.

Very good.  Thanks. :)

The problem, as I understand it, is that the iPod doesn't play tracks with long file names.  I'd say it's an iPod problem.  You might say, and I would agree, that we should find a way around it.  I might say, and you might not agree, that you could rename your files to get around it.

It's something we'll eventually get to, but it isn't something that should delay release.

MC10 & Wavelab 5 average about3% cpu usage at same bit & sample rate.

The Subtext links like Albums, Files, etc.  is not viewable; totally removes the functionality of the Library browser unfortunately.

4. DSP settings & crossfades getting burned to disc even though option is unchecked.

Also getting last track chopped off; probably due to this error.

Re: We'd like to release MC11....so.... bad bugs?

Last chance.  We're getting close to letting 11.0 go.

Please post anything that is clearly serious in the bug thread for the build.  No change requests, please.

Please keep in mind that work will continue on MC after release, so the fact that we're releasing it doesn't mean that your request is being ignored.

I'm closing this now.
