Gapless playback with UPnP server?
« on: March 29, 2005, 12:03:08 pm »

Does the UPnP server support gapless playback with any of the UPnP devices?  I've searched, but haven't found any previous discussion of this.

Thanks...

What exactly do you mean by "gapless"?

I mean that tracks that flow into each other (common examples are any number of tracks from Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon and many live albums that have audience applause transitioning from one track to another), really do flow into each other during playback, without any introduced gap.  In other words, if you have tracks on the original CD that have no gap between them, do they play back without a gap using the UPnP server/devices?

This is a common problem with portable MP3 players, including the various iPods.  I'm guessing these UPnP devices have the same problem.

All devices I've used have the gap.

My Philips SL400i introduces gaps between tracks so I'm sure it would break apart something like DSOTM.  The unit actually goes one step further and disables the S/PDIF output between tracks which adds the the lock-in and unmute time of the receiver to the picture.  Slick implementation, eh?!

Gapless playback is pretty complex, and with UPnP we're still trying to get the basics right. Gapless playback is pretty memory intensive, and a lot of the devices are short on memory, not to mention the additional complexity of doing gapless.

I could say I wished it all worked perfectly now, except then I'd be out of a job :)
I know it's frustrating sometimes, but it's also very cool and fun...

p.s. I saw a documentary recently on DSOTM. It was incredibly weird to see David G. playing the music, when he looked like he'd fit better playing the senior's tour with Arnold Palmer :)
