MC 11 does not work with Microsoft Multimedia keyboard!
« on: April 08, 2005, 01:51:00 am »

Hi guys,

I used to use MC 10 but am now trying MC 11 because of the better support for portables. However, after MC 10, my media controls on my Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard no longer work. Pressing the play/stop/forward/backwards button on the keyboard no longer causes the corresponding actions to happen in MC 11. Does anyone know a fix for this? THanks.

The keys should work properly if you don't install IntelliPoint.

This is a messy area because each manufacturer tries to solve the problem their own way.

I have intellipoint (the old version which came with my keyboard) installed. Why is it it used to work with MC 10 and now its broken? I know the new intellipoint does not work with MC 10 but since the older version does, should'nt it be possible to also get MC 11 working?

Do you mean IntelliType?  IntelliPoint should only be for the mouse.

I want to keep IntelliType installed to be able to configure the remaining buttons on the keyboard.  Like 1ns4nity, I don't see why it should be working with MC10 but not MC11.  Are there any changes that are necessary to make other keyboards work but that make it impossible to support the MS Multimedia Keyboard at the same time?

Would intellipoint affect scrolling?  The main browsing area of media library scrolls like sh**.  Everything  else (library tree, panes) scrolls fine?

Just to be clear, I meant Intellitype in my earlier post.  Some versions of Intellitype do custom routing of media keys instead of letting programs like MC handle them in a normal way.

I have never had intellitype installed and other than play/pause/vol/mute the media keys have never worked in any version of MC for me.

First, you may want to check out an old thread I happen to have bookmarked:  Media Keys on MS Multimedia Keyboard.  (Don't ask me why I have it bookmarked; I just do. :))  I don't know if your answer is there, but it may be.

Second, I infer from your other thread that you have an ATI video card.  FYI, ATI installs (by default) a service to intercept keystrokes (to allow you to change views, modes, etc. without going into the control panel directly).  I switched back to Nvidia, so I don't recall the name, but it was always the first thing I removed after any Catalyst driver update.  If you open the service manager, it'll be there right at the top since, as I recall, it does actually start with "ATI" and not some disguised name like some S/W drivers like to do.

Anyway, it could be that that is what is causing you your problems. <shrug>  I say that because I, too, I have never installed Intellitype (not since the advent of Windows XP anyway), but unlike you, I have never had a problem with MC (v.9.0, v.9.1, v.10.0, or  v.11) properly handling my MS Natural Keyboard's media keys.  8)

Do you mean : "atisserv.dll" ? And do I just remove it?

Go to Control Panel/Admin/Services and find the service.  It's called something like ATI Hotkey ...  Then stop it.

It's called "ATI Hotkey Poller" and it causes all kinds of problems with other applications.

I found it , however it set on automatic and the start stop controls are greyed out. Should I go into properties and disable & restart?

Try Help on Admin.  You should be able to double click on it and set it to disable.  Then you may also need to stop it.

Yes.  Double click on it, hit Stop, then in the pulldown menu select Disable and hit Apply.

A good resource for determining which services are needed and which aren't, including third party services, check out http://www.blackviper.com/ (appears to be down at the moment, but it's a very informative site).

I used properties and disable and then restarted the computer. It worked.

I forgot to mention, that I'm using win2k, not xp.

Now, what about getting the ATI remote to work?? yeah, I know that's another thread! ;D
