export library to Excel
« on: April 22, 2005, 11:35:40 am »

Hi all,

I tried the export library - and then tried to import to excel and get the following error:

File cannot be opened because:
An invalic character was found in text content.
Line 195953, Position 47.
Changes My Life, Changes Your Life - There Ain (there is a square - I can't locate this on my keyboard) No Easy Way

I did a search of the forums and saw suggestions about cutting and pasting but this doesn't work.

How can I get my library data into Excel?  Any help would be appreciated.

"There Ain't No Easy Way"   :)

I have to ask some questions first.

How did you export and import? How many items the exported library has? Could you just change or delete that text string in MC before exporting?

Have you tried copy-pasting? You can select items in MC and copy-paste to Excel.

I have about 35 K songs in my library.  I tried the library export feature (I believe that exports to XML file) - I tried to open with excel and got the noted error.

I then opened up my library and selected all - selected Copy - went to Excel - Paste - no go......

Any other suggestion...

Broncodan,

Are you by any chance running version 10 of MC?

As far as I remember you can't copy directly from the library to excel in MC10, but you can do it from playing now. Try starting your full library and copy from playing now.

How about this?

1. Select all and send to a new playlist. Go to that playlist. You can sort and update the list order if you wish.

2. In "Customize Current View" you can select the fields you like to export.

3. Export the playlist in ASCII Delimited format (Only Visible Fields).

4. You can open the ASCII Delimited playlist with Excel (start Excel first and use File > Open). Use the | character as a column delimiter when opening.

In my opinion it's even more simple than that....
I choose Media Library > Audio. Then in the list of all tracks, I select all (CTL/A), then copy (CTL/C).
Then I open Excel, and simply paste (CTL/V). From that point on, you can do anything you want. Of course I only have 6000 tracks in my library....
