Reading and writing external files from a plugin

This may be Yet Another Stupid Question, but...

I had a programme which was previously an external exe hooking into MC.

I'm now in the process of converting it to a plugin.

However, all the operations I do to read and write to text files on the disk just fail - surely that's not a limitation, is it? If so, is it an ActiveX limitation, or an MC limitation?

I'm confused...
