mc11(262) and ipod: songs in the root dir
« on: May 10, 2005, 05:56:19 am »

hi,

i am trying to find out if the latest build 262 now works with my ipod. it doesnīt. :-(

the ipod is freshly set up.
mc recognises the ipod correctly. i can also sync a playlist to the ipod.

but mc saves the mp3s to the root directory. on the ipod no songs (altthough they are there) or playlists are found - therefore i canīt play anything.

i couldnīt find anything like "initialize" by clicking on the ipod in mc.

plz help.

thx

Did you try a right click?

I don't have an iPod connected, but it's there.  Try the upper left hand corner of the action window after you've selected iPod.

Your iPod is not being detected correctly. What OS do you have?  Using explorer, verify that you have a folder on your iPod called iPod_Control. Try formatting your iPod from Windows and then disconnect and reconnect your iPod.

hi steve,

i use win xp pro sp2. the ipod is freshly formatted from the explorer, then i used the newest ipod-software to "make the ipod ready". the ipod_control dir is there.
mc262 detects the ipod in the second i put it into the docking station. the sync also works fine.
but, as i said, mc copies the mp3s into the root-dir...

any ideas?

thx

chris,

If the files are in the root directory, they will not be playable on iPod. I assume this is what you are seeing. What ipod software are you using ? What kind of iPod do you have?

hm...
i open the action window; select "handheld player"; then a new "action window" opens with the name of my ipod as its title. when i left/right click the sysmbol in the upper left corner i get the following options: "show list, clear list, options, transfer"

am i doing something wrong?

Chris,

Expand the iPod in the tree. Do you see folders such as 'Trashes, Calendars, Contacts, Notes' or  like "Albums, Artists, Genres, Playlists"? If the former, MC is not detecting your iPod as an iPod. Go to Tools->Options->Handheld and click on the 'RESET' button.  If the latter, verify once again through Explorer that you have an iPod_Control folder on your iPod.

i see "calendars, contacts, ipod_control, notes".

if i reset the handhelds, mc asks me if i want to have my ipod treated as an portable media player.
i always thought this would be correct.

what do i have to change then, please...

That is correct.

Can you browse in Explorer and post exactly what the path is to the iPod_Control file on the iPod?

Thanks,

Steve

Try renaming your volume label so that iPod shows in the explorer tree as 'IPOD(K:)' . In iPod_Control you should see a Device, iTunes and Music folder.

Something is screwy with the way you have set this up. You could try making sure no applications are auto detecting/auto formatting the iPod and then format it from Windows. Unplug and reconnect and see what happens when you start MC.

i killed the ipodservice and ituneshelper tasks.

the ipod shows up in the explorer as an external drive.

when i try to use the ipod with mc265 -> mc copies files into the root dir.

itīs pure mystery (since i am the only one with that problem).

do i have to specially format my ipod for mc?
is there a step-by-step instruction for "how do i get my ipod to work with mc"?
how do i have to format the ipod? with explorer, right click, format? (thats what i did)
but then the ipod has no folders at all (which is no surprise).
by using the ipod-software/restore-function i get the folder structure back, but without the ipod_control\music and \itunes folder.

Are you using the Handheld icon in the Action Window to start?

hi jim,

the ipod is auto-detected by mc as a portable media player.
it doesnīt matter which way i use for sync (auto or manual) - files always copied to root.

Have you tried locating the iPod in the tree under Drives & Devices and Initialising it then synching again?

Sorry, I'm a bit slack when it comes to reading threads this long so I sometimes just jump in with a quickie suggestion in case it helps. Sorry if it didn't.

If you've restored your iPod using iPod updater and still find that MC can't work out that it's an iPod it sounds like you have something funny going on on your PC.  Maybe you could try it on another PC to see what happens.

Chris,

Could you try using iTunes and transfer a file successfully. Take note of the filepath. Then go to Explorer, expand the tree until you see the file and then email me a screenshot of the path.

Thanks,

i donīt think that there is something wrong with my pc, since my ipod syncs fine with itunes 4.8 and mc 10.173.

it seems that mc11 doesnīt like me...  :'(
