Cannot burn - HELP!!! -- Solved!!!
« on: May 03, 2005, 08:22:26 pm »

Over the past couple of days, I've burned 4 CDRs that made no sound. The first 2 were on .252, the third was on .254 and the fourth was just now on .255. On both CD players (3) and running on the CDRW through MC .255, no sound comes out but the counter counts and the song title shows -- just no music. Previously burned CDRs work fine.

Update:
I have now burned 6 CDRs with the same result -- no sound -- using successive builds. Everything LOOKS like it's playing normally in 2 CD players and even from within Media Center but no sound is produced.

There's been no reply here but sometimes that in itself gives information. I assume that no one else is having this problem so I tried a couple of other things:
Maybe a bad batch of CDRs? I bought another batch of Memorex.
Still no joy with Media Center. So I got desperate -- I tried a burn in Windows Media Player.
Guess what --- the burn went fine and the disc plays well. Go figure.

Anybody got any clues? Anyone? Anything?

Hi C8,
Does encoding conversion work?  MP3 or whatever you have to WAV?

Is the disk getting closed?

My only thought is that some other program may be causing problems.  We've seen that with several, including XP's own burning.

My wren came back this weekend.  His house was waiting.

What soundcard are you using?  It sounds like it's just a case of unmuting one of the channels.  Use the software included with your sound card or try Control Panel.

Yes. Store-bought CDs play, CDRs burned by others and CDRs previously burned by me in Media Center (a few builds back) play fine.

Audigy2 ZS. Set to 5.1 playback. All  channels are functional for playback. Is that what you mean? These CDRs won't play in ANY CD player.

Yes. At least it says "closing disk" at the end of the burn.

You could always try backing up your library, uninstalling MC, and then installing the latest version. Since MC seems to be part of the problem, starting fresh might help.

Does it make any difference if you enable direct decoding? Also, maybe try decoding to wave files first, then burning. Try the burn at half speed. I'm just not sure what could be happening here.

[edit] Try installing the latest build. There was a bug fix a while back in how DSP settings were read from the registry. This could possibly cause the "no sound" problem.

Nope. Tried it both ways. Also with and without DSP recording. DSP works fine in playback of things other than these newly burned disks.

I'll try the wav conversion thing.

Even though DSP settings checkbox may be unchecked, what DSP settings are "in" there when you check the box and broswe the DSP. Anything?

Yes, that's a good idea. If you're not going to install the latest version, at least look at the DSP settings for burning (even though they won't be enabled) and turn everything off (disable all DSP functions).

If you're not going to install the latest version...
Maybe there's something about me you didn't know: I'm a "New Build Junkie". I install the latest whether I need it or not ... AND I check for new builds daily.

The [convert to wav >> burn from that] didn't work but I went back and opened up EC (which is some version of MC10 I believe) and burned a disk successfully.
That makes successful burns from WMP and from MC10.

I'll try the DSP shut-off thing but I'm running out of disks.
The up side is that if I buy a stack, I'll have cases to put them in ... if and when I can burn from my program of choice.

Also the uninstall > reinstall idea seems sound. It's worked for other problems with MC before. That seems like a last resort as it uses a restore. But I probably have plenty. I haven't used one in ages.

It shouldn't.

Problem solved -- sort of.
I uninstalled MC 11 and tried to reinstall but get a "runtime error" and the setup aborts.
I've tried restarting but it doesn't help.
So I've switched back to MC 10 and it's burned before so maybe it will again.
Is it still supposed to say "Entertainment Connection"?  With only one skin available?

OK. Now everything is solved. Here are the steps I took:
Uninstalled MC11.0.266
.266 didn't want to reinstall so I tried .264.
Same as above but with a different error message - I didn't note what it said but it was at program start-up, though.
Tried .263 and got it installed down to "must restart Windows".
All worked well and then I reinstalled .266 over that and everything works, even burning.
I don't know what you people were so worried about.
