What file naming convention do you use?
« on: October 10, 2002, 07:52:18 am »

1.  I have always just used Artist - Song Name for the file name on my .mp3s.  However, now that my collection has grown it appears I may need to use Artist - Album - Track - Name.

2.  I am running into problems with same songs on different albums too.  In some cases I would like to keep both, especially if you want the whole album.

I was wondering how everyone else is handling these issues.

That's what I use

for soundtracks:
Album - Track# - Artist - Track Name

In the Past I Used:

Artist - SongName

But Since There Is A Bug In MJ's Renaming Sub That WillNot Allow The Auto Rename Of A File If There Is A Dup File Name I Now Use

Album - Track# - Artist - Track Name

And I Use The Option To Change The Track Number "Fill Track Number From List Order) This Gives Nomaly A Dif File Name If There Is A Dup.

I Understand This Baiscly Changes All The Track Numbers To Wrong Ones But There Is Not Much Else I Can Do, Since This Problem Has Been In MJ For Over 1 & 1\2 Years.

I use both directory name scheme and filename scheme.

directory scheme:

\artist\[ARTIST]\{ALBUM}

filename scheme:

[ARTIST] {ALBUM} TRACK# - NAME

For compilation I use a different directory scheme:

\compil\{ALBUM}

and the same filename scheme.

Track names:
Artist - Album - Track # - Track Name

... in a folder scheme like:

My Music
 Artist
   Album
     Tracks

I use:

E:\MP3s

--> \ARTIST\
---->\YEAR-ALBUM\
------>\TRACK#.TITLE

for Compilations I make sure to set the Album Artist field to "Various Artists", and the REAL Artistname in Artist, so for example they get stored like:

E:\MP3s\Various Artists\2002-A Nice Selection\03.The Third Song

I don't bother with the artist name in the filename (why would I when I already know that from the dirname, and for compilations, well, isn't that what ID tags are for ;-)

G:\MP3's\Artist\Album\01 - Track Name.mp3

I do it that way, so they will be sorted by number and retain the album's track listing when played on portable devices such as my Sony Clié NR70, and my Sony SAV-C990 home theater.

Artist\Album\## - Track Name.mp3 has always worked for me.  I started using that with MMJB and see no reason to change it.  But then, I only rip audio books, so duplication isn't much of an issue for me.

Just to add a different spin :) I use Artist - Track # - Name - Album in a folder scheme Artist/Year Album/

This way my tracks are always sorted in album order and my albums in XP are always sorted in date order.

Just my 2p
