Deleting files from smartlist takes a lot of CPU
« on: June 15, 2005, 12:46:57 am »

I'm having a problem when deleting items from my duplicate smartlist, MC stops responding (using 50% CPU). The music and library are on a removable HDD if that matters at all.

I'm having a problem when deleting items from my duplicate smartlist, MC stops responding (using 50% CPU). The music and library are on a removable HDD if that matters at all.

This happens also on my PC when deleting files from my Missing Files smartlist. Rule: [=IsMissing([Filename])]

The CPU usage would be ~100%, but because I have P4 HyperThreading enabled and MC uses only one of the two virtual processors it is only 50%.

That expression is physically checking for every file.  It could be very slow depending on your environment.

Yes, I know, but that is not what happens. In this case CPU usage maxes out and MC hangs totally. It will not recover. Only killing it in Task Manager helps.

Effectively the problem crashes MC instantly when "delete from library" is accepted. I just mentioned the CPU usage because probably also cascius uses HyperThreading.

Can you reproduce on other smartlists?

Can you reproduce if you don't delete from disk?

Thanks for any more details.

This is interesting. I can't reproduce the problem anymore after booting the PC this morning. Executing the search takes a long time (as always) and a during the search CPU usage is only 3-7% (I didn't check that earlier). Once the smartlist is ready I have no problems deleting missing files from the library. The other smartlists work OK too. I can delete files from the library and from the disk.

Yesterday I could reproduce the problem after a reboot. I wonder what happened during the last night. Perhaps MC was just tired and needed some rest.  ?  ;D

cascius, can you tell anything more about your case?

It also happens on my computer sometimes. It even crash MC once when I try to delete duplicate files.

Hopefully it will be fixed next build! =)
