How Can I remove duplicate music files in Library
« on: July 07, 2005, 12:39:01 pm »

I have a lot of duplicate music files in my music library. My music library size is about 30 GB of songs. How can I safely remove duplicate files from my library.

Right click on the files and click delete, unless I'm missing something...

You can use the ctrl key with the mouse to custom-select which files you want to delete.  To identify the duplicates, just hit the drop down arrow in the search-bar on the upper right, choose Modifier>Duplicates and enter the criteria for duplicates (e.g. [artist],[album],[name]).

I thought this was easy?  Can't you just make a smart playlist to list all possible dupes?  I think there is a preset for just that.

of course you can. EpF showed how to do just that in his post above.

Do that, then you have your list of possible duplicates. Obtaining the list is the easy-peasy part. What you do with that list is then entirely up to you.

For me, I choose to keep most of my duplicates. Hard drive space is cheap and I keep full albums intact. I use a set of library filters to ensure that only the best quality file out of all the dupes is ever called by a smartlist search, but also retaining the option to play back any full album should I wish to do that.

Whatever route you choose to travel to manage your duplicates, my advice is to jump on it early. The longer you leave it, the bigger your library grows, etc. etc.

go to playlists, rightclick, add smartlist  ... or just hit F9 :-)

in the smartlist rule choose Audio - task - Possible duplicates

You can customize it after to restrict it to be less "possible" and more "sure" duplicates :-)
