Is there a User Manual?
« on: August 13, 2005, 09:45:22 am »

I am a complete newbie to Media Center (it's still in the 30 days) and want to use it to help me sort all all my media, sync with my iPod and (most important) increase the volume on my iPod as it's the capped EU one.  The software looks excellent but my problem is I find the Help file confusing - I don't really know where to start - and I can't find a User Manual.

Does anyone know if there is a User Manual or book or anything to help someone get to grips with the software please.

Welcome to the wonderful world of MC!

I believe the help section is still a work in progress  for the recently released version 11 of MC, however, please feel free to post any questions you might have here in the forum, ("There are no stupid questions"). MC does have a somewhat high learning learning curve because of it's capabillities.

We are a friendly bunch of users here and are happy to help anyone that asks, including  noob's! You will probably find that the forum will become an integral part of your using MC.

For iPod questions, be sure to check the portables section of the forum. If in doubt where to post a question just post it in the general section, the moderators will move it, if need be.

Again, welcome to MC and ask away!

I was about to answer, but somehow I guessed that Jay would answer to this in his helpful style and better than I could do. I decided to wait a bit. My hunch was correct.  :)

... sync with my iPod and (most important) increase the volume on my iPod as it's the capped EU one.

I don't think you can make it sound louder with audio software. Usually if you make audio files louder they will be distorted (clipped) unless the original volume is low.

I have heard that it is possible to remove that stupid volume limitation by modding the iPod. Though, that may break the warranty.

You could also try different headphones. I like Koss Porta Pro. They are noticeably louder than my other portable headphones (Sony & Philips) and and they are real hifi too. Much better than anything else in the price class.

I have an overview of how to use an iPod with MC here. There is some information on volume in the thread. Look for Mp3Gain. Good luck, iTunes is easier to use, but MC is far more powerful.

Increasing gain can help if the original CD has low overall volume.

However, most of the modern popular music recordings are already gained to the max (and unfortunately have nasty compressed sound quality too). In this case SW cannot increase the volume anymore. It can only make the sound even more clipped.

Thanks for all the comments - especially the link to how to use the iPod.

On the volume bit - I've used GoPod (an English version of Imod I'm told) but it didn't seem to make much difference.  I've also tried Eupod - again without much difference.  Thanks to Alex B for the headphones suggestion - I am using Bose much of the time and they do seem to make the sound softer.

So it's back to the Help File I guess.  But I appreciate all the help so far.  Any more links would be really helpful
