Multichannel Ogg files (5.1) and MC11
« on: August 13, 2005, 09:49:39 am »

I have decoded a couple of DVD audio tracks into Ogg 5.1 format, however, trying to play these files with MC11 does not produce any sound. it does not produce anny error message either.

Any ideas??

Because MC does not have multichannel decoding internally it will not work if MC tries to decode a multichannel Ogg Vorbis file. (I guess you mean that. Strictly by definition, OGG is a container type file format, though I don't know if other codecs are commonly used with it.)

A solution might to be to use a Matroska container instead. Then MC will forward the file to an external OS level decoder. Here I wrote about my experiments with AC3 multichannel audio in a Matroska container: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26055.0. I think Matroska works with multichannel Vorbis as well.

Many thanks Alex. I'll try this and let you know whether I get this to work. Native multichannel support by MC11 would be great though for version 12. Also, supporting z7player for video formats instead of the dreadful Quicktime would be a HUGE improvement!!

Cheers

AAlex,

after installation of the Matroshka pack, it now plays the ogg file being renamed with an ".mkv" ending, however, with some ugly background hiss.  Any idea why that could be?

I have no idea. I have never tried that. I guess you could try to make a real Matroska container file. Can you play the ogg file without hiss with some other playback application?
