I've got a "CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device" Onboard Sound Card. And I have cross-fade enabled.
I tried what you said and... it works! I set sample rate to 44100kHz and nothing changed. Then also I set bitdepth to 16bit and MC likes me again :-)
But I still have two files wich making the "machine gun" sound. Perhaps more, but I don't find any more at this time.
