Multiple MJ Versions on 1 Computer
« on: September 02, 2005, 12:06:58 am »

I would very much like to run 2 (ideally 3) different versions of MJ simultaneously on the same computer.  I have versions 6, 7, and 8 all with licenses.  For a variety of reasons I would love to run either seperate versions of all version 8, or versions 6 & 8 (or 6, 7, 8).  I have tried installing 2 versions but it always creates an error in one of the versions and it will no longer load.  Even though there are seperate directories for installation files, there must be a registry problem.  Is there a way around this?  Would purchasing a version of Media Centre allow it to co-exist with MJ8?

King, you are not exactly correct. Only one instance of MC11 and one instance of MC10 can co-exist and only the last two or three builds of MC10 contain the needed fixes for that. In spite of the fixes, I have found that some plug-ins (even JRiver made) may not know where they belong when MC10 and MC11 are installed at the same time.

All other MC/MC, MC/MJ, MJ/MJ, MC/MC/MC etc combinations make registry problems as YaletownLad said.

The registry systems that MJ and MC use are simply not designed for multiple program instances.

It is possible to have several separate libraries and use several playback zones for extending the usability of MC.

A multi-boot PC is one possibility for having separate windows registries.

Yes I know

However for just MJ8 alone that was not possible at all

And I have read some posts in the near past that also confirmed what you are saying.

I Personally Don't see a need for more than one instance.

MC11 can do many things MJ8 couldn't.

YaletownLad,

Could you explain what you are trying to do? Perhaps it's possible with MC.

I have a sizeable music library that MJ currently does a beautiful job of organizing.  I also having a growing collection of non-music mp3 files like audio books and educational programs.  Given the fairly substantial size of the music library it would be nice to have complete segregation of the non-music audio with a completely different instance of MJ.  I also have the DSP studio set up for music playback.  The music settings aren't ideal for voice only playback so I turn them off.  While this is not the end of the world, my aging memory often forgets to re-enable the DSP effects and I'll be well along in my listening of a musical album before I think to myself that it doesn't sound quite right and re-enable the DSP.

yes i do too, i have over 250,000+ mp3's but i can do it with one instance of Media Center.

media center will allow you to create multi-library collections that are totaly seprate from other files.

so you do not need MJ8 muiti installs, one Media Center will do it.

regardless, you will not see any improvement with media jukebox
