I recently downloaded MC 11 to evaluate.  I am always looking for a good alternative to Musicmatch, which I feel emphasizes its fee-based services too much within the program.  Musicmatch was also recently acquired by Yahoo, which concerns me about the program's future.

I maintain my entire, rather large music collection on my PC in WAV file format so I can distribute uncompressed music throughout my home.  As far as I can tell, MC 11 does not support WAV file tagging, which Musicmatch and a few other programs do support.  For this reason, I can not use MC 11.  If JRiver were ever to add WAV file tagging capability to MC in the future, I would consider replacing Musicmatch with MC.

Or, maybe the capability is there and I just don't know where to look.  If that is the case, I would appreciate a point in the right direction.

The wave file format standard is not designed to contain metatags. All current implementations are proprietary and the resulting files are nonstandard. Many programs have problems with tagged wave files.

MC supports natively the Monkey's Audio and Windows Media lossless formats, which support tagging. A third lossless format that can be fully used with MC is FLAC. It is supported by third-party plug-ins.

These three lossless formats compress wave files losslessly to 40-70% of the original size. They have also some other advantages over wave besides being taggable.

MC has the best database around and it can store all information in its library also when wave files are used. It can convert wave files to other file formats and tag the new files using the library information. However, you would need the get the information inside MC first. If your filenames and folder paths contain e.g. artist, album, track number and track name information MC can fill the corresponding library fields by using the information stored in the filenames and paths. MC has a brilliant templete system for that.
