Anyone on here have a podcast? I just made my first today (i.e. baby's first podcast). Actually, I'm calling it an Audiocast, but whatever. Here's the link:

Well, right. I guess I'm not even sure about the free tracks I pulled. Free as in from legit sites where bands put up promo tracks. They're still copyright-protected, I'm guessing...but...sorta out in the wild, too. I dunno.

A podcast is usually an MP3 file that is linked to by an RSS feed.

In the article, skip down to the section called "Making the podcast feed..."

well i guess basicly (maybe)

if i knew how to use the xml then i could input links and the xml would be the podcast feed?

cause i do not see anything else i need other than a xml file with links.

maybe i am wrong, confused and dazed.

if true there should be a easyer way of creating a xml to create a podcast feed.

Interesting, i will need to do some more reading.

I was hoping for a program to allow me type in a bunch of urls (like 10 or 12) and it would create a xml poscast form.

It doesn't seem you're really doing a podcast... what's the RSS/Atom URL?

King: Podcasting is just a means for distribution. It's benefit is in discovery (thanks to podcast directories) and auto-downloading (thanks to RSS aggregators that handle enclosures). With an RSS (or Atom) feed, you can allow people to get at your content without visiting a website manually. There are plently of podcast creation applications: Castblaster, Odeo, and EasyPodcast just to name a few. You are correct that you could manually create the RSS, but that sort of defeats the purpose of podcasting: it should be easy and automatic to create the audio file (there's nothing that requires it to be an MP3) and then publish it in an RSS feed.

I think there's still lots of confusion about what an RSS (or Atom) feed is and why it's useful.

There's some web site somewhere which will generate the whole xml file for you. You just have to fill out some stuff (like name of the cast etc.) I don't have the link on this PC, though, but you should be able to find some web based rss generator.

Edit: I forgot, which will support podcast first, Thunderbird (stable since they are the only ones which gets translated) or MC? You did talk about it at some point...

The XML you've written is not well-formed because the element <lastBuildDate> doesn't have an end tag. You are correct that capitalization counts, so </lastbuildDate> won't do.

The question about validation (i.e. does it conform to the RSS 2.0 schema) is another question. When I get home from work, I can check for you - or you can use one of the on-line validators for RSS such as http://feedvalidator.org/.

If I may ask, why are you creating RSS feeds by hand? What is the goal?

King: Good stuff... I for one would be interested in subscribing to some of your OTR as a podcast feed. The flash-based podcast aggregator (pupu) is interesting, but it doesn't seem too useful to me - other than as a way to leverage your RSS feed to people who can't spell RSS.

Please think about this: the MC XML Export plugin can already be used to create an RSS feed from a playlist... it would be trivial to create an XSLT that transforms an MPL into RSS or Atom. And every time some use like this comes up I can't help but think how much cleaner and more efficient (and elegant) it'd be if JRiver included the ability to transform the library natively rather than having to depend on a plugin.
