When I try to listen to a sample of an audible book, I get a message that says:
Windows Media Error:
The specified protocol is not supported.

What version of MC are you using?  11.0.314 is the latest and it's on the download page you can find here:
www.jrmediacenter.com

Do you have a link or a title that doesn't work?  Can you play it with another player?

I open Audible.com from MC and click on "Hear Sample". I can't play a sample with any player.
I can play my audible books with MC.

I've just tried the "Hear Sample" from the book called "Road to Dune" on the front page.  It works.

You may have an old plug-in installed.  Try MC/Tools/Service Manager and then "Hide", then "Install".

I tried Dune with the same result.
I did Hide and Install - same result.

Information on the unsupported protocol message says:
Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files.
DirectShow: Unknown streaming error: 0xc00d2ee0
Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location.

A truly cryptic message to me. Hope it helps you.

Try reinstalling MC.  Watch for any errors during install.

Is Windows up to date?

Copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

Windows XP is up to date.

For what it's worth, the DirectShow referenced earlier is a TIVO file??

I don't know what the problem is.  Sorry.  Things I can think of to explore:

1.  TiVo file?

2.  What else is running?  Use the task manager to see.  Shut them down.

3.  File associations?

4.  Weird program problems -- spam killer, popup blocker, virus checker, firewall, etc.

5.  If you have another PC, try it.

6.  Third party plug-ins?  Uninstall them (to test).

Directshow shouldn't be involved if it's an audio file being played.

What happens if you open it in IE?  Or as a URL in MC?

I wonder if Audible thinks you have a Real Player. 

Try deleting your Audible cookie.

It will have a name like:

yourname@www.audible.com

and be located in:

c:\documents and settings\yourname\cookies

Next time you try to play, Audible will ask whether you want the Real or the Windows Media format.  Choose WM.

I had to uninstall and reinstall Windows Media Player 10 - now everything works just fine.
