Gordon,

Do you mean as soon as you click on the iPod in the MC tree?

If so, try browsing on your iPod in Explorer to the iPod_Control folder and find a folder called iTunes and then a  file called iTunesDB. Delete it. After this you should be able to run MC but you will not be able to see your files on the iPod. Then try right clicking on the iPod and select 'Rebuild database from iPod'. YOu should then be good to go.

PS A new version is coming soon where this will not be necessary.

It is not ideal to switch back and forth. 11.1 should safely handle switching between them.

Go to Tools->Options->Handheld and enable the option to 'Sync data to PC' for the iPod.

In regards to 11.1, wait for the next build.

'Sync data to the PC' will sync only ratings and playcounts to MC from iPod. Whenever you sync, MC will transfer songs to the iPod that are not there (if they are selected). MC will only delete files from the iPod if you enable the option for 'Delete unselected files'.
