Multiple UPnP Client Device Connections
« on: July 07, 2005, 08:37:41 am »

Any one out there have any advice how to connect multiple UPnP client devices from different manufacturers to the same MC11 UPnP server.

MC11 only allows UPnP config for a single client type

In my example
DSM320, Nero Showtime and Streamium SL50i - these all need different settings on the UPnP server ?

Hi CampbellR66,

Currently the only way to do this is to "Autodetect". It'll handle each request separately then.

I'm looking for ideas on how to elegantly add this capability...

From what I've seen UPnP devices can identify themselves to the network.  At least my Streamium shows up as such in Windows.  Perhaps MC needs a configuration utility that could be run one time just to build a table of devices and allow the user to specify settings for each device.

Once the config table is built, it can be used to map the appropriate settings to each device that shows up on the network.  If an unknown device shows up the current autodetect function could be used to generate a new entry in the device table.  This entry could than be edited if the user needs to change some settings for the new device.

The problem with the autodetect option is that if MC11 fails to detect the device then it goes into a retry spiral until it finally crashes..... to see this try the intel UPnP control point software.

Actually, that problem wasn't with auto-detection, that was the Intel server making lots of requests at the same time. I've fixed it, look for it soon.

The auto detect fails detecting the DSM-320 media lounge device.
The only way of getting it to work was to specify the DSM20 device in the options. The settings are then wrong for the other UPnP devices

That's a typo, fixed soon. (The problem may arise in the future, some devices are difficult to autodetect...)

Having "real" support for multiple clients would be useful if the devices need different profiles (example: one connected over wireless, another one over a wired connection).

In a related context: I've just been playing around with the Intel UPnP utilities and my two DSM-320s. It is possible to remote control the DSM-320s with the Intel tools, so in principle it should be possible to add this to MC. While not really a push of content to the devices, it's probably just as good (big advantage: I don't have to turn the TV on to play music  :)).

Simon

PS: with the 1.5eu firmware and MC11 release UPnP plugin, I get still the repeated start of tracks that has been reported here.

Not posted on this for a while...

MC 11 still does not support multiple UPnP device profiles.

I have tested with
Phillips Stremium SL50i
Show Center 1000g and 200
DSM 320
the woefull Nero Showtime UPnP software client (snig)

MC will need to takle this functionality at some point soon.

Pleas also consider restricting the content type ie only Music files to a music streaming device.

hey while i am at it how about some access to the parental controls functions that the MC 11 has.

I agree.

I haven't thought about this till now as I'm planning on adding a media player for use out on the deck.

I'm using a Streamium inside and I don't think I want to go that way for outside.  The current Streamium line is dead for all practical purposes and Philips has yet to fix the major bugs.  The way it is now, my only choices are getting another Streamium or buying two new players.  I'd rather not have this limitation.

This part is already in there.

Will check again but i seem to recall a Pictures container appearing on the Streamium SL50i .... could have been an older version though

If you choose Streamium for the server options, it'll display all categories. So, first choose Streamium, then advanced, and then choose the music only  option.

What would an SL400i (If i ever find one at a decent price) see if it was also connected to the network ?

Unfortunately it won't do what you want (yet). I'm still thinking how to do this part.
