Sound stops, hissing starts
« on: October 07, 2005, 05:08:23 am »

Everynow and then I have a problem
where suddenly music stops playing, and
instead is replaced by a hissing (like a TV not tuned in).
This has been happening on and off for about 2 months.
My collection is 90% APE'd, and I've only seen it occur on the
APE files.

APE files are recorded fine btw, and playing them in the same place at a later
time will play fine.
Stopping Media Center and starting again causes them to carry on playing fine.

I'm going to try reverting to the built in Sound card for a while
and see if that helps... but I'd appreciate any ideas.

Cheers
ChriZ

Just made a discovery on this one...
I downloaded a codec to play APE files thru Windows MP...
and I can produce exactly the same effect playing the APE files through that.

Turning off all other sources on the sound card has no effect.
Something fishy going on here!
will keep updating!

One thing i didn't make clear in the original post, is that the music doesn't
stop playing it just turns into hiss, so the media player believes it's still
playing ok...

I am having a similar problem.

I have a laptop with a USB M-Audio sound card connected to my receiver. The laptop is getting the files from a server running MC Library server (100mb wired). Every so often music just stops playing. MC on the laptop looks like it is still playing. If you hit stop, then start, it will continue.  Oh yes, I don't hear any hiss. It is as if the pause button was hit.

I had it running last night and fell asleep. When I looked at the server plugin, I could see it had stopped on a particular file (WMA lossless).

Is there another log with more information on either side that I can check??

Thanks,
Vin

It just happened to me, twice!

APE or WMA.

If I pause, then play, it starts up again.

I am using Windows 2000 on the laptop. All of my systems have MC11, distribution build. I should probably upgrade to XP anyway. Which might help.

VGaurino--
IF (and only IF) you are always getting these pauses at the end of the track, specifically 5-seconds before the end of the track, then you should review the thread "pausing before end of track" by Twherreman.

If you spend as much on beer as Mr ChriZ claims he does, then your problem is probably related to his and you should post it here.

Oigh I heard that  :P
(Peers at bottom of empty beer glass)

I'm still researching on this one...
I've downgraded to .305... and haven't had it happen now for
a couple of days... but I'll give a more conclusive evaluation in a few weeks
time.... Mines definitley not five seconds before the end though, it's usually around mid track.

Try disabling or uninstalling all third party plug-ins or visualizations you use.  Just as a test.

It's not really a pause. Sound just stops. It happens anytime during playback.

It is possible the laptop is just not cutting it. The CPU is only about 10-20% when playing. But if you run anything else, it can spike.

I'll try a few more things.

Jim,

It happened again last night. When I got home from work today, I checked and the player was in a play mode, but no sound, as if it were paused. I have a debug log from the time frame where the file was loaded.

At the bottom of this log, the data repeated all night and day until I stop it.

Hope this gives you an idea.

Still Ongoing....
What I've crossed out so far :-
*Sound Card
*Sound card sources by muting
*Different Media Center Versions
*Plugins + Visualisations

Still only occuring in Ape files at present,
but given that most of my collection is APE
that doesn't mean much...

Playing APE Files under WMP also had the same effect
as mentioned somewhere above.

 ?

Next thing I'm planning on trying is moving most the APE Files
on to networked storage in case I'm getting read errors or something...
any bright ideas would still be much apreciated.

I don't think my problem is the same as Chris.

I think I may have alleviated the problem too. I upgraded to XP Pro from Win2k. I'm sure it is more that I cleaned up everything in the process. I'm not running any unnecessary stuff either.
