 ? Is it true as it appears that MC 11 is unable to work with image files ?

Therefore a CD cannot be backed up  to an image filr, nor can an image file be read.
It seems also true that MC 11 does not recognice Imgage file to either play them or burn them as a copy to a CD ?

This is not a criticism, but I figured that was a fairly basic feature of any media copy/backup/rip/burn software ?

I hope I have missed it.

I find the use of Image files (.iso), as the best means of backing up media. IT allows for a perfect image copy.

I think it's slightly out of MC's domain.
Media Center is a home Media (ie Video, Audio, Images) management system
rather than a compression/backup tool, although it does overlap these slightly
by allowing you to rip audio cd's to digital formats.
If they did go down this road then they would have to think about supporting zip,
rar, jar and so on which might detract time from things like IPod type devices, DVD Playing, High quality play back of music and so forth.

Are you sure ISO is a perfect copy as well? I though it was just a structured file, with header info and that if the CD's got copy protection etc I don't think ISO's can hold it,
but I could be wrong may just have been the old ISO ripping utilitys

Theres a fantastic tool available from

which allows you to mount ISO files to a drive letter.
You could then view the ISO files from within Media Center.
However It still wouldn't allow you to rip it.
Maybe someone knows a similar tool that goes further!

A rip to a lossless format such as APE, WavPack, or FLAC will allow you to burn the original CD at any time.
Any of these formats will provide you with lots of space savings as well as allowing you to play your music from MC and other players without mounting an ISO file.
APE format has the advantage of allowing you to use APL files to play selections from the entire CD instead of seeking to the track in the whole APE file.
WavPack is not supported in MC I think. I'd like to see it, but it isn't likely to happen. You might be able to play this format using DirectShow filters, but I have no idea if MC supports them.
With MC support, WavPack would be my format of choice.

Here's my favorite features:

# Unique hybrid mode (provides high quality lossy + "correction" file)

The MD5 or SFV you can do with seperate checksum files/album, i recall discussing this with you some time back and you were happy with this system. It's nicer of course if it has it built in but hardly essential.

on the hybrid, hmm..store only the lossy files to save space, then have a correction file to get the lossless version.

lossy + correction file == lossless (any codec) would take the same amt of space ??

Why not save in APE/FLAC etc..mC will convert on the fly. Takes longer but would it take the same time with correction file + lossy or just lossless wavpack as well ?

or if u don't need lossless just store as mp3.

So why use Wavpack still ??

Only reason i'm left with is you have extensively used wavpack in the past and it's not worth converting to the formats mentioned above. In which case i'd agree it would be nice if MC could support it. Seems most of the major free players do so already.

Yes, you can do checksums seperately.
But, why if there is a tool that will do it for you?

As for the lossy + correction, it is much smaller than the corresponding MP3 & APE/FLAC/Whatever. And you can store the corrections ofline (DVD) and use them only when you need to recreate the WAV.

You still don't have the lossy/lossless combo that WavPack offers in any of the other formats. You have to transcode to get there whether on-the-fly or not.

There are other features I like as well, but those two are my top reasons for liking WavPack.
