Greater than XX songs filter?
« on: November 23, 2005, 10:21:19 am »

Help.

I use MC11 with Tivo but figured I would post here since it is an MC discussion and not Tivo.

I have ~130GB of music.  the problem is that I have LOTS of compilation CD's from Europe, most of which have 20+ artists on the disc.

I want to keep the artists in the tags, but unfortunately when I go to sort through artists, I have, on average, about 100 artists per letter of the alphabet.  That means a lot of scrolling on Tivo.

I have a view set up for recently imported music but what I would also like is a view that filters our only artists with 5 or more songs.  That would dramatically cut back my lists so that if I want to find, for instance, "The Replacements" I would only have to scroll through major artists and not every one hit wonder who shows up in the T's.

Any ideas?

Filters like that aren't currently possible (be nice if they were!).

I have a view, which isn't exactly the same, but may help:

[media type]=[audio] -[Album Artist (auto)]=[(Multiple Artists)],[] ~sort=[Artist],[Album]

Basically this removes any "mix albums" from the equation, so you only get proper artist albums. Hence artists with only a few tracks in your collections should be filtered out.

Dunno if that helps or not....

Thanks, that takes me from 2400 artists to ~1300 artists.  Definitely a good step in the right direction.

I don't have any experience with the Tivo.
Help me and others with the same lack of experience to help you...

I had a quick think over this for you, and these were the questions I came up with...

how is the library presented at the Tivo end? (Is MC's tree mirrored on the tivo, or does it just list everything in the library using the [artist] tag, or does MC run a single smartlist and then send those results en-masse to the tivo?)

can you give more details about the end result you want to achieve. do you want to browse tracks by artist or albums by artist or both?

playlist to find one-hit wonders

p1 = [Media Type]=[Audio] ~nodup=[Artist]

in your view scheme (Step 4) exclude this playlist from display

Cool - so the smartlist in MC would be:

[Media Type]=[Audio] ~dup=[Artist] ~sort=[Artist],[Album]

This gets all tracks by artists that have at least 2 tracks in the library.

So to get what AustinBike wants, it would be nice (please JRiver?) to extend the "dup" command to something like:

~dup=5,[Artist]

so that it would only show artists with at least 5 tracks in the library.

Any chance?

If you want to know what the Tivo interface looks like, I'll take some pics off the TV later and post them up for everyone.
