Somewhat OT -- Creative and Evil Patent-Mongering
« on: December 09, 2005, 02:50:42 pm »

Has anyone seen this story about Creative going after Apple for the iPod interface?  Something really needs to be done about the sorry state of the Patent (and Copyright) systems...  For now, it's too bad Creative can't take a hint from their company's name and actually develop some innovative products, instead of using a Patent Club (TM) to beat on their rivals.

This type of thing makes me far less likely to purchase any new Creative products (such as the new X-Fi cards), but I'm quite concerned about these issues.  Do others feel the same when making purchase decisions?

My understanding was that Apple claimed they owned the scroll wheel and threatened to sue Creative if they used it.  Apple also threatened to sue Real for figuring out how to write "Fairplay" protected files to the iPod.

I agree that patents have become ridiculous.

This is plagiarism:

In the prehistoric days of computing, there was a simple game, called Liza (I think).  The game was a fake psychiatrist.  It would say

"How are you?"

If you said, "Fine.", it would say:

"Really?"

You'd say, "Well, yes.", it would say:

"Are you telling me the truth?  How do you really feel?"

or

"You seem a little blue today."

and so on.

It was pretty erie what it would come back with sometimes.  You really felt like she knew things about you that you wouldn't want her to tell anyone.

What I like about you, JRiver people, is that even when you give us a build with not much of a bug to keep us busy, you keep us entertained anyway.

JimH, you and IOth might want to consider getting a room together.  There are issues that need to be worked out here.

Not my intent.  It's just that Iwas seeing such a mutual admiration/oddity society here.

To rope and wrangle this topic back on track for a minute:

 ;) ---------O  :o

I personally think Creative's products rival Apple's anyday. Sound quality being the biggest of their strengths.

However I do feel that patents have gotten out of hand as well

1.  Okay, I get it (finally).  JimH and IOth, I give up.  I'm better off harassing Sparta or the scandinavians, who are always good for a chuckle.  You guys are just too quick for me!

2.  Creative products (the original post).  I use them.  The highest-quality "consumer" hardware for audio, IMO. (EMU, etc are "prosumer, IMO).

The drawback is that the CEO Sim-Wong Hoo, has real difficulty with sticking to facts.  Witness the class-action settlement for over-promising on the specs, etc etc.

You shouldn't harsh the Scandinavians (with a capital S, please), since we are all violent vikings prepared to do something stupid! Argh! And Mastiff has a dog! You'd better watch your back. Mr. Sparta is, of course, all yours...

Between the Dutchmen and Mr. ChriZ, we might as well start using hand signals.  Are those your pictures, which you have highjacked this thread to present, or am I missing something again?

If those are your pix, I like #4, although I would frame in so than the lower dark area is almost gone.

Yeh thats about the jist of it, cheers for the recommendation, I'll look at clipping it tomoz!
This seemed like a well hijacked thread already so i though i'd add to the melay.

Theres some nobs outside keeping me and anyone else in the neighbourhood from going asleep.
It's 3am in the morning and they're loud and drunk and have been there for 2 hours.  :(
It's tempting to call the police but from what i've seen in the past they don't actually do much,
and it looks like they may finally be disbanding... :-S

There's a Miranda IM plugin too, called Eliza, which I use to annoy the hell out of my nephew.   ;D

The only winners in this patent circus are the lawyers that fight the cases.

Talk about work for life....

...which is why i don't think it will be solved in the near future (if at all).
