Why is an song title called "Name"?
« on: December 17, 2005, 09:15:24 am »

Not a technical question this time.
I always wondered why the title of a song is called Name in MC.
Title seems more logical to my. Now and than I think that Name is the name of the Artist, not the song.

Maybe it is just my bad english ......   ?   ;)

What Then Happens If It Was Not A Song But A Document?, Image, Podcast Or Movie?

Why Would you Want To Call Them "Song Name" Or "Song"?

In fact I am not using the Name field for my images.

For a Podcast I would rather see 'Episode' than 'Name'.
Personally I do not categorize a Podcast under audio. It is it's own categorie, like image or document.

A movie has a Title in normal life.

A Document has a name, thats true.

That would mean that depending on the media type certain fields would have a different column header.

Name is certainly different than Title.  Title is a pure example of metadata.  Name can be a reference (e.g. filename) or an ill-defined metadata (name of what?).

Title seems the more accurate label from my perspective.

One could also define
a song name as "Song"
a document name as "Document"
a podcast name as "Podcast"
an image name as "Image"
a movie name as "Movie"

Just a thought.

IS anyone hinting at the possibilty of column headers that change themselves depending on what media is displayed ? :)

what would happen if more than one kind of media was displayed as would happen easily with a CTRL+F ?

I don't know if automatically changing field names would be a good idea, but currently it is quite possible to change the displayed name. It is separate from the internally used field name:

"Columns To Show" in the view options must be fixed after the change.

Indeed. I have changed to 'Song' instead of 'Name'.
The new Library Browser adopts the name automatically.
Playlist and View scheme need an the update through 'Customize Current View' > add the new field > Save this view for all locations.

I am happy! Now i am going to check if this renaming does not interfere with iPod syncing.   ;D

Although I choose Category 'Audio' (in the Configure Library Field) it does the overwrite for all Media Types.

What does the category setting do? Or what should it do?

What does the category setting do? Or what should it do?

It dictates which group of fields it should be grouped with in the action window > file properties > tag info window.
If you chose audio, you should notice that has been dropped from the 'general' group. You might want to change it back as 'audio' is a little out of place for it, imvho :)
