In my use of MC over the years, I've always put my album art in a folder called Images. Now I want to have album art on my iPod Nano. So I've been using iTunes for awhile since MC didn't have that capability.

Now that MC does have that capability, I am going to switch back (or actually, move to just using one program rather than two). But I have a question:

Does the album art have to be in the file for it to be transferred to an iPod from MC? (I know this is how iTunes works). If so, is there some (easy) way to get the art into the file? I can click "add art to file" but I assume that only does that for new art that is found when getting art from Internet. Am I correct?

Album art is still a little shaky in 11.1 but it's very close.
Seems some ipods work great and others don't.  JRiver is nailing down the inconsistencies.
To directly answer your question, NO.  The artwork doesn't have to be in the files.  I keep all mine as folder.jpg.  It also should work using the single album art folder.  The albumart sync refers to the config settings for the album art option.

Do you know if there is any way to extract images that are embedded in the files? All the music I've bought off iTMS has album art, but they do not show in MC. I can just go "search for art on Internet" and I get a pretty good hit rate, but not always and, of course, that's duplication.

I've never used itunes so don't know if they both should see the images the same way.  Does itunes have any way to save the images as folder.jpg in the same folder as the song files?
If so, you would go into MC and highlight your songs.  Right click and choose Image > Remove cover art.   Then after that's done, Right click and choose Image > Find in folder.

If not, then I usually just let MC search internet for the images, then follow that up with KingSparta's plugin.  So far I only have 4 albums with no art, and Amazon.com and a few other sites I've tried don't have it either.

Hmm, got it.

iTunes is pretty anemic when it comes to actually letting you see what it is doing and where things are going. So, I guess it's back to the manual way.

BTW, I'm having virtually no luck with King Sparta's plug-in. It's not finding album art on brand new pop CDs even. Last time I ran it, on about 50 albums or so, I think I got 4 hits. I don't think it picked up any art for the albums from iTunes. Have any idea why it would do that?

I have pretty good luck with it.
He's got a fairly new version of it out and looking for feedback on it.   Check with him over in the plugins forum.  Post up the exact Artist and Album title so he can check it out.

I have the best of luck with the atagger plugin finding art that the others don't, but it doesn't support the folder.jpg setting in MC.  It only supports the art all in one directory, which may be what you want to do.
