OT -- Red Envelope for GHammer
« on: July 13, 2005, 08:25:49 pm »

In case you missed it, our friend, GHammer is getting married.

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=28496.0

He's American but living in China.

I propose that we give him a traditional Chinese gift -- a red envelope with some cash in it.

I'll give the first $10.  If enough other people will pledge $5 or $10 (by e-mail to jimh @ jriver.com ) that we can get to $50, I'll write back and we'll figure out how to do it.

Whatever the outcome, I wish GHammer All The Best!

Thank you very much. Hanhan thinks that is very special.

Here are a few photos from our wedding party.

In case you don't know (I didn't) in China weddings are done differently.

You have your wedding pictures taken. These are done in a studio, lots of cosmetics, costumes, etc. The idea seems to be to not be recognized! And you get a few lifesized portraits along with an album, a DVD, smaller portraits.

You get your wedding registered at a goverment office. Very NOT romantic. Think of getting a drivers license. Wait in a line, give someone a form and some cash, come back tomorrow and get a certificate. Actually, a small booklet. Since I am a foreigner, we had to go to the provincial capital to register our marriage.

Finally, you have a wedding party. Family, friends, co-workers, everyone associated with either the bride or groom are invited. This is usually held at the best place the couple can afford. Lots of food. Whole chicken, whole fish, whole turtle, roast pig shank, lotus root, dofu, oh geez, LOTS and LOTS of food. And beer, and Chinese white wine.

Our wedding party was a bit different in that I am a foreigner and do not know all the things I am to do. So we had fun instead! We ate, drank, sang, and everyone had a great time.

Then it's back to the 'cave room'. Our apartment was decorated with papercut art. Double Happiness and Hearts. All the guests follow you back to your home and stay in your bedroom (cave room) to tease you and generally have more fun. The real reason is to make the room very loud which will make the future prosperous.

Thanks again for the gift and the good wishes, especially the good wishes!

Ah, marriage. If I'd committed armed robbery instead I'd be out of jail by now.

But seriously, congratulations. My wedding was a great day, and I hope yours was too.

imjustagamer, lee269, and mhorton,

Thanks to you, we're sending a red envelope to Gary and Hanhan.

If you'll send me the contribution any way you can, I'll send it on.  If by check, make it to me personally.  By paypal to jimh @ jriver.com.  I can arrange credit card, too, if necessary.

ghammer,
Do you know anyone coming to visit from the U.S. well enough to ask them to carry it?  If not, let me know any other thoughts you have.  We'll get it there somehow.

Hanhan was quite surprised and thinks its so cool that people would go out of their way to send something here for us.

Thanks everyone!

Merry Christmas to one and all.

Ha!

Good think you said that!!! I just opened the secret comparment and freed Grant from his prison.

It will provide a lovely wedding/Christmas gift.
Hanhan was VERY surprised to see that fall out of the envelope just now.

Thanks again everyone, you are all the best.
Or "fei chang gan xie" from the both of us.
