Jukebox 8.0 Media Center together?
« on: December 23, 2005, 08:13:40 pm »

I use Media Jukebox 8.0 and consider it best of the many programs I've tried for mp3 organizing, tag fixing, etc.  I use it as an example of "what software ought to be"  I have tried Media Center twice and found it obscured the basic mp3 functions I am used to doing with ease. I always returned to Media Jukebox 8 -- not easy to do because Media Center seemed to take over every thing.
My question: is it possible to have both programs on the same computer and be able to use Media Jukebox 8.0 by its self with out any interference from Media Center? Can the data bases be totally separate?  Any suggestions?

I think you'll have some problems.  Side-by-side install wasn't supported until the MC 10 core.

I'd recommend spending a week with MC 11.1 -- I think you'll find some things to like.

I couldnt get them to work side by side, and have always been told it cant be done. I think each has its pros and cons too.

The Windows registry settings would be conflicting. The databases and program locations can be separate without problems. Installing the programs side-by-side could be possible with two properly defined batch files that change the registry before starting MJ or MC.

I have used MJ and MC and I don't think the file handling or tagging functions are worse in MC. Perhaps the jump from MJ8 to MC11.1 is bigger than what I have experienced since I have gradually upgraded all MC versions during the last couple of years. In my opinion everything MJ8 had and a lot more are easily available in MC11.1.

Yeah, I've found MC to be just as easy to use as MJ. It's just a matter of ignoring all of the things you don't want to use --- all the good stuff about MJ is till there, there are just a lot of other cool things as well. Plus, MC is very custimizable, so you can turn off a lot of the services you don't want, change parts of the display around, etc.... tailoring it to be the ultimate Jukebox, while retaining the power of MC's newer features. Uninstalling MJ and upgrading to the latest MC is worth tackling the learnign curve for, because in the end I tihnk you'll be much happier.

On the other hand, the one problem I have found between the Media Center versions and the old Media Jukebox versions is that with MC I experience more slow-downs -- sometimes tagging can be very slow, as MC freezes up for seconds or even minutes at a time if I've been doing a lot of file/tag alterations. Sometimes it's fast, and then sometimes I'll just try to update a single field of a single file, and there will be this long pause before I can actually make the edit.... MJ always had much faster response times, no matter what I was doing. But MC 11.1 is much improved in that regard compared to MC 10. Still slows down more often than I'd like, but it has improved. And to be fair, I should admit that I've got a much larger database of music and video files now than back when I was using MJ -- so that could be a big part of why things are slower for me now. (If I had more RAM and a faster processor I'm pretty sure MC 11 would run like a dream.)

But you'll find the tagging ability, plug-ins, cover-finder, tag cleaner, CD Burn and Rip, etc., are all better with MC than MJ. And the podcast support in MC 11.1 is very convenient. I could go on and on... MJ is a great little program in it's own right, though, so I can't knock it. Simpler days...   :)
