2nd gen ipod crashing MC 11.1.91 (and lower)
« on: January 02, 2006, 11:15:54 pm »

Problem with 2nd gen ipod.

I think I've got this narrowed down.  Things used to work fine with my 2nd gen 20G and my (4th gen?) ipod mini.  I had MC working so I could sync them both with different settings.  I was happy.

Now, whenever I plug in my 2nd gen ipod, MC crashes.  ("ModName hh_portable.dll")  It's easy to reproduce.

1) Format the ipod in Windows
2) Initialize the ipod in MC (any of the last 10 revisions at least, including 11.1.91)
3) Disconnect the ipod
4) Reconnect the ipod
5) If MC is already running, it will crash as soon as the ipod gets mounted by Windows.
6) If MC is not running, it will crash when you launch MC.  (Splash screen is OK, then main MC window, then MC crash less than a second later.)

Ipod mini works fine, so perhaps I'm one of the last people still using an old, old gen 2 ipod?

Also (very minor observation), when I select "Initialize iPod", it sends the MC screen to the back of Windows.  Doesn't hurt anthing, it's just weird to have MC disappear mid-operation.

Cheers,
Fred

I can't reproduce this.

What happens if you skip the format, and just initialize?

Also, could you post a log (Help > Configure Debug Logging...") from a crash?

Thanks.

I can't skip the format and just initialize, because MC crashes as soon as I plug in the ipod (unless it has been formatted).

Here's the logfile.  I'm only logging handheld events - let me know if you need to see more.  In this example, I started MC, enabled logging, then plugged in my ipod.  MC crashed, and this is the entire logfile.

Thanks,
Fred

Is there a file called "SysInfo" on your ipod at <ipod drive letter>:\iPod_Control\Device?  If so could you post the content of that file?  (Just open it in notepad and cut and paste.)

iPod_Control and Device are both Hidden folders so you may have to turn on "Show hidden files and folders" (Tools -> Folder Options -> view tab) in explorer.

Here's my Sysinfo file:

pszBoardHwName: iPod P97
pszSerialNumber: U2234318MMF
pu8FirewireGuid: 0x00055343
buildID: 0x01508000 (1.5)
boardHwRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
boardHwSwInterfaceRev: 0x00020000 (0.0.2 0)
bootLoaderImageRev: 0x00010000 (0.0.1 0)
diskModeImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
diagImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
osImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
oemv: 0x00000001

For what it's worth, I hooked my ipod up to a different PC also running MC 11.1.91, and it caused the same sort of crash.  I was thinking it might be an old (mis)config file on my main PC, but now it's looking pretty universal...

Could you email the sysinfo file from an iPod that causes the crash to matt @ jriver?  Thanks!

There should also be additional logging in the more recent builds.  (Like yesterday's.)

That could be useful.

Yes.  Please install the latest build and then send a log and the system info file to matt @ jriver.com

Thanks for the help!
