Music gone on Nomad 3? Please HELP!
« on: January 09, 2006, 06:54:28 pm »

Hi, have been really happy with the player for years but when i was transferring some music on it, it ran out of batteries.

When it loaded up it said something like "reloading library" - not sure what to do i turned the power off.

When it loaded up most my music had gone - pretty well much all of it, 4 years of music suddenly gone. Am absolutely gutted, but i think there might be hope as the player recognises that most the memory has been used (it still says there is only a few megs left).

Can anyone help? I would be so happy to get my stuff back...thanks

Can you see the files from Windows Explorer?

not quite sure what u mean, but when using the creative playcenter - it mirrors what the nomad says - not many songs but all the memory used up

Dude,

sounds like yer library got corrupted...

Some of this might help - BEWARE! You can reformat the hard drive using these functions!!!

---
Remove the battery cover
Partially remove the battery
Press and hold STOP button
Slide the battery back into position - the unit should power on.
When the CREATIVE logo appears on the display, release the STOP button then immediately press and release the PLAY button.

The following options will appear on the display:
1).Clean Up (Performs a disk scan on the players harddisk)

2).Format All (Formats the players harddisk - Note: all contents will be lost)

3).Reload OS (Reloads the Operating System on the Jukebox. Note: Reloading your OS, will not effect the contents of the files stored on your Jukebox Zen)

4).Reboot (Reboots the device).

---

I have a feeling Option 1 rebuilds the player's database...

I will keep looking for you in the meantime...

You DO have another copy of your music elsewhere don't you? ie. theses machines use a 2.5" hard drive (like a laptop), which can and will fail eventually. If you have no other copy of your data, that would be bad...

FORGOT TO MENTION - Make sure you have a good power source while the rebuild is happening...

BTW Next time your Nomad wants to rebuild the library, DON'T switch it off until it's finished (on mine, the process doesn't take that long).

When  i do that it only cleans 12% (all that it left me with) and when redoing the library it stops after a little bit (12% i suppose ).  :(

Bummer...

Sounds like the hard drive might have died.

Have you tried a re-format?

Yes a re-format will lose all the music on the drive. Do you not have a copy of it elsewhere? If not, that's crazy! You need to have multiple copies of the data.

At worst, you might be able to remove the drive, and send it to a data recovery company to see if they can extract the data.

My boss recently had to do this to recover a whole bunch of email archives off his laptop harddrive when it died (He had no backup copy).

You can try option 3, it may help, at least it won't reformat...

When you say it only get 12% through...Have you tried just leaving it sit?

yea but it says in the FAQ that i should only use that option (3) if i know what im doing and unfortunetly i dont!

I dont have any copies of the music on my player as it would have taken up too much room on my already full computer.

When it gets to 12% of the scan disk it simply stops and says cleaning and then goes back to the menu.

(also not sure if i could afford to send it off somewhere to get it fixed)

Thanks for all the help, by the way!

No probs on the help front.

You NEED to get enough space so that you can have a copy of your music...You only need what....20 gigs?

Do you have the latest firmware in your Nomad?

If not it MAY be worth upgrading to the very latest firmware. You never know, it may have a "smarter" library/disk rebuild feature.

Don't get your hopes up, but at this point, I guess it's worth trying anything isn't it?

Good Luck...if you don't know how to upgrade the firmware, give me a yell back...
