iPod still not fully ejecting
« on: February 03, 2006, 12:22:02 am »

As far as I remember MC has never fully ejected the iPod.
When MC ejects the iPod (whether you eject manually or use auto-eject), the "Do not disconnect" message disappears as it should, the iPod disappears from MC as it should, but it still appears as a hard drive in Windows, and it remains in the list of the hardware you can "safely remove".

I believe this is the reason why, when I sync my iPod, eject it, leave it plugged in, close MC, restart MC, I receive this message:

Quote
There is no database on your iPod.

Would you like to erase everything on the iPod and start over?

Scary -> Click 'No' ->

Quote
Your iPod could not be loaded.

Use the iPod Software Updater to restore the iPod to factory settings.

Then reconnect the iPod and try again.

This not fully ejected thing was tolerable until these messages started appearing in 11.1 a few builds ago. Now, this is really annoying. First because I have to get rid of these messages each time MC starts but more importantly because the auto-eject feature is pointless if I have to use Windows' "safely remove hardware" thing.

Can we get rid of these messages or, better, can MC fully eject the iPod?

I think that there is probably no need to "eject" in the first place.  Apple puts the message there so you don't disconnect in the middle of file transfers.  If the file transfers have been done for a few seconds, then you can just disconnect, no matter what it says.  Or so I think.

But we will take a look at this.

This is a limitation of the current eject system.

I'd recommend not ejecting unless you're going to actually unplug the iPod.

As Jim said, it's also safe to simply unplug an iPod if it's not busy.  I've done it 1000's of times with many iPods in the last few months without a hitch.

Windows didn't make this easy on us, but next build of MC 11.1:

NEW: Media Center does an OS-level eject on devices like an iPod when the system suports it. (so it's removed from the "Safely Remove Hardware" system, etc.)

except, I just realized the "auto eject on..." is now gone from the handheld options. No big deal, I guess it'll be back in Monday's build.

It only appears for an iPod.  Check what device you're configuring at the top of the handheld options dialog.

and if the iPod is plugged-in when you set the options. I finally figured it out.

Unfortunately, it's the "sync on connect" feature that doesn't seem to work for me now. I plug the iPod in, MC detects it, the sync info appears in the AW, but then nothing. I have to hit the sync button myself.

hey, I'm I the only one with the "sync on connect" problem with 11.1.113? Should I start a new thread about this?
