MC11.1 & Anti-Spam, Pop-Up Blockers Whats The Best?
« on: January 29, 2006, 01:46:29 pm »

Recently I had problems installing MC11 I am not sure what Was The Problem But Right After I Reported It Matt And Company Fixed The Installer To Work Better.

I have been wondering if there are other people still having problems installing MC 11.1.108 Or higher?

If so what type of Anti-Spam, Pop-Up Blockers, Virus Software Your Using?

Also Since For Some Reason I Can't Install Symantec's software what is a good Anti-Spam Program?

I Am Currently Testing "Mail Washer Pro 5.0" (Unregistered) It Downloads The Header Only And Can Delete The Messages Directly Off The Server Without Downloading The Whole Message.

I Happen To Be Using Microsoft's "Windows One Care" beta For Virus Protection, and Microsoft® Phishing Filter.

I Have Noticed That Microsoft's Anti-Spy-ware Does Not Work Well. On My Wife's Computer It Found "0" And Then Using "Spy-Ware Doctor" Right After It Found Like 300+ Problems.

Trying To Protect Your Computer To Use The Programs You Want To Use Seems to becoming A Bigger Problem Every Day.

I have been using mailwasher pro for almost 2 years now. Started with 3.3.
Once it learns what you consider spam it works great. With the addition of a few filters I see very little spam and most of that only once. I have the log emailed to me once a day to review what was deleted since I have it delete automatically. You can recover deleted emails depending on how many lines of the email you use for analysis.
Tech support from them is great.
I originally started using the program since my kids all have their own email accounts so I wanted a single product that could protect multiple accounts. I now use it to filter about 30 various accounts that I own for various things. I have seen no perfromance issues on the machine it runs on. It just sits in the background quietly protecting us.
For anti virus I use Avast free and then run spybot once a week.
I also use a host file and am behind a SOHO router.

I have yet to be infected on any of the machines at home here, 5 in total.

For spam, I like to delete it before I download it, all these will do that, one is free.

G-Lock SpamCombat http://www.glocksoft.com/sc/
Mail Box Dispatcher 2 http://www.anti-spam-tools.com/
MailWasher Pro http://www.firetrust.com/firetrustpro.html

For popups, ads, annoying things, I use Ad Muncher http://www.admuncher.com/

For viruses it's hard to beat Kaspersky, but I use avast! Home because it works well and it's free. http://www.avast.com/

Lastly, I run MS Antispy. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
If another tool finds lots of items, what are they? I see many list cookies. I don't care about cookies. I want to know when settings are changed, startup apps are added, you know, real threats.

Haven't been annoyed, infected, or otherwise troubled by any misbehaving things.
But just in case, I also use Acronis True Image and keep a good image of my system.
Easy, and it restores my whole system in about 5 minutes.
No, I do not image my data drives, just the system drive. OS, programs, email, etc.

So It Looks Like MC 11.1.108 Fixed The Installer Problem.

You'll see that my themes are (1) doesn't use many resources, (2) works well without being a pain to use, and (3) free or cheap.  For me, simpler is usually better.

SPAM:
I don't use any particular product for Anti-Spam, just Thunderbird's built-in filter which works beautifully after you train it for a little while.  I rarely (if ever) see spam in my inbox, and since I'm on a broadband net connection I don't care at all about deleting the spam before or after it downloads.

Anti-Virus:
I use Symantec Anti-Virus 9.0 Corporate.  It works and it's what I have.  I would be interested in recomendations for any good, non-resource-intensive, cheap anti-virus applications.  I don't mind paying, but I don't want to have to subscribe to anything.  It should update it's definitions without complaining or reminding me in any way forever (additional functionality of course doesn't need to be free).  I've heard that Symantec ruined the Corporate AV product with v10, so I won't be updating mine.

Online Ads and Popups:
Firefox and AdBlock Plus (plus the Filterset G Updater which is an addon that auto-updates Adblock's definitions).  That's all you need.  I never see ads.  Period.  Plus it's free and works beautifully.  The nice thing about AdBlock Plus is that it's easy to whitelist specific sites so that if it happens to mess a page up (which is pretty rare) then you can quickly and easily whitelist that page to keep it working.  Another nice add-on for Firefox I use is Flashblock.  This simple plugin just deactivates any Flash content on web sites (before you download the content) and replaces them with a button that you can click on to activate that particular flash object at will.  This is great for those obnoxious flash-heavy sites that make you jump through a bunch of "promo" things before you get to the real content.

Spyware:
The old standards... Lavasoft AdAware followed by a reboot and then Spybot S&D.  They work, they're free, and they find and kill just about everything out there.  I've tried lots of other Anti-Spyware products (including pay products) and nothing really works as well.  The only one that got close was Webroot's SpySweeper.  It was nice in that it worked automatically similar to an Anti-Virus application, but it wasn't nice enough for me to pay for it.  AdAware also has a paid version that offers many of these features if you want them.  Personally, I'd rather not have it running all the time eating up resources.  I scan my machines once every other month or so and combined with running Firefox for all my browsing I never have spyware problems.  In my testing Microsoft's Anti-Spyware app worked pretty well at the common spyware applications out there, but there were quite a few real threats that it missed.  It also failed to properly remove some of the more insidious applications out there (coolwebsearch for one), even though it did detect them and report that it had removed them.

General Maintenance:
Someone above made the recommendation to create an Image of your computer when it is properly running.  I can't encourage this practice enough.  I keep all of my user-files (basically the contents of all of my user's "My Documents" folders) on a separate hard drive.  When I perform a fresh-install of Windows on the machine I always create 2 backup images of the main system drive (I use Norton Ghost but only because that's what I learned to use at work).  The first one is just a very basic image of the machine with Windows installed and any drivers required to run the machine (chipset, video card, networking, and storage) and nothing else.  I then create a second image of the machine with a full suite of all the applications I generally install (soundcard drivers, Firefox and Thunderbird, Office, MC, Adobe CS2, etc, etc, etc).  I keep these images in a closet on a hard drive I bought for the purpose which can be re-inserted whenever I need to.  That way if I have trouble, I can always step back to one of those two "base installs" to fix or diagnose the problem.  Since all the user data is on a separate disk I don't have to worry about losing that stuff when I re-image.

I guess im the only one here that uses Outlook's spam filter. It does a good enough job for me. I rarely get a false positive and just empty my junk folder about once a week.

As for anti-virus. I personally recommend NOD32 by Eset (http://www.eset.com). It is the most resource friendly, user friendly, highly rated anti-virus program available. Currently I am forced to use McAfee Enterprise edition due to the retarded Cisco Clean Access system my university implemented last year. I would be using NOD32 if it were not for that one problem. Matter of fact, I still have 9 months left on my license for NOD32 that is just going to get thrown to the wind because of this stupid Clean Access system.

Since switching to Firefox, i get so few pop-ups that haven't used a pop-up blocker in over a year. IE with SP2 is just as good as well. However, the one I used before was Pop-Up Stopper Professional.

I like all of glynor's suggestions.  In addition, POPfile is a great little trainable spam filter.  For AV, Antivir and AVG Free are very popular, light weight and free AV apps.  For ads, Firefox + Adblock Plus + Filterset.G Updater = no ads or popups.
