Autotagging lyrics
« on: September 20, 2002, 04:25:56 am »

I'm very busy collecting lyrics for the songs in my database. Gets me a instant RSI, I can tell you :-/

Does anyone know of a program with which you can, say, drop a copied text into a certain MP3-tagfield (in this case, of course, the lyrics field).
So I don't need to open every mp3; search for the lyrics-field; edit the field; close the editfield.

Preferrebly it should be able with a rightclick (after having put the text in the clipboard) on the mp3-file in the Explorer (or MJ ofcourse :) )

Anyone?

Hi Kingsparta, thanks for your quick reply.
I don't get it, however - must be my poor English.

I collect the lyrics in a Access database, with artist and songnames in it, too. The artist quotation is different from my MJ- and Explorer: surname, first name instead of first name, surname.

Can I do something with that? And, if yes: how? (that automatically stuff you wrote about).

Well A Plug-In Can Be Made That Will Do This.

And If I Had Someone Willing To Put A Large Database Together I Would Be Willing To Make A Plug-In That Will Do This.

Hi King,

do you mean, you'd like to have my database with (in the end) some 8,000 lyrics - and that you then would like to write a plug-in? Or don't I get the message right?

Otherwise: I'd be more than happy to send you that database (whenever I've finished it...)

Well?

Maybe you should post the database to a website, so that we can all contribute to this. I have some lyrics, too, and would like to help collecting a database for automatical lyrics-taggins (because this is something I would like to have myself, too).

More that glad to.
Anyone who has a website where I can send my database to? I don't.

Still curious if I did get KingSparta right, though

Another person here who would be willing to add to a database of lyrics.
I would have thought one of our code junkies could set up a site with some kind of form which would allow lyrics to be easily added to a database...

Would do it myself if I knew how ;)

It's been done before. I think the RIAA had it executed, though.

If anyone has a database send it to my e-mail address.

I will merge all databases into one, and create a Auto Lyrics Taging Program (MJ Plug-In).

While I have an Access DB, and then started keeeping lyrics in LRC format... when I started using MJ I ended up embedding them in the MP3s and stripping the timestamps. The Lyrics in my MP3 collection is the most complete set I have now.

If you can write a quick plugin to extract Lyrics from an MP3 library into an acceptable format, I imagine you will get a large collection submitted.

Nonetheless, I emailed you a zip copy of my Access DB.

I exported all fields, but Lyrics do not seem to be included.

Am I missing a setting? I did select "All Fields" rather than Visible.

I tried the msg again using plain text. I've seen this "no atttachment" bug before, but I'm not really sure what the cause it.

Just looked. I guess it can't be done that way.

send me what you do have, and maybe if i start this project, i can create something if the MJ plug-in commands allow it.

I'd love to help, but I have a problem.

1. I have no idea which songs in my library have lyrics.
2. I already gave myself carpal tunnel getting them in there, I don't want it again getting it out. :P

If somebody wrote a plugin to extract them, I'd run it in a heartbeat and submit what I have. It's honestly not a lot, because of the tedious nature of adding them. My most recent project is to rip all of my CD's to APE/APL, add coverart and lyrics. The problem is, I have so many scratched CD's.

I wish there was some way I could turn in my scratched CD and get a new one. Even for just an hour.

There is a good database of lyrics at lyrics. com [edited by JimH -- site is loaded with pop-up ads].  I will quite happily go in and start extracting them for you.  What format would be the best.  Text files?  Excel? Access?  HTML?  Let me know and as soon as I have full time access to my computer again I will start submitting...

Aaargh... :P  This is what annoys me about the internet, but it is also what makes it great....

A quick glance through this post shows 5 sites already dedicated to providing lyrics...and here we are discussing the creation of a 6th archive!  Why???  How can that be useful?  Wouldn't it be easier to go to one of these sites and talk to them about integrating with Media Jukebox?  I don't see why the lyrics site wouldn't be open to the idea...  It would surely expand their reach by covering all current and future MJ customers, plus they would be receiving alot more submissions to their database from MJ users.   It would really boost MJ's usefullness and market share, as lots of people would rather use a product that has lyrics integrated instead of copying/pasting from a web page into say WinAmp or WMP.  There has to be a significant market out there for this if five sites exist just for the collection of this data.  Ideally, MJ/JimH should set something up with one of these sites as a new feature for v.9 (please!!!!).  But, if he has reasons to not do it, someone should design a plug-in that could function as an interface.
Please explore this opportunity before recreating something that already exists in so many other places....

Lyrics sites get traffic via visitors - not through seamless DB integration. They might agree by adding Ad popups in MJ - but I doubt anyone wants that.

While I've gotten some of my lyrics from web pages - many were typed in. I have no problem with putting them in a communal DB. But be careful of offloading someone's work and using it in the DB - it's not only bad etiquette it might generate bad feelings. I know the RIIA killed several sites because they wanted royalties on lyrics as well.

Sorry Jim for posting the site with pop ups.  I surf with a pop up killer running in the background and the sound to tell me when there are pop ups present turned off so I never even realise there are any there!!
