What folders/files = MC Library?
« on: February 11, 2006, 11:10:13 am »

I use a program that synchronizes files across my two home computers.  I would like include my MC Library in the synch by manually using this app, rather than via Backup/Restore in MC itself.

Can anyone tell me which folders/files are the ones that contain the MC Library?

Thanks,
Lee

Open Library Manager and you will see the path(s) to your Library(s).

Thanks.  I tried backup up this folder from one computer to another, but it seems that just replacing the files is not enough  -- it didn't bring in the library, playlists, etc correctly....  whereas when I use MCs built-in Backup on one computer, and MC's restore on the other -- it works correctly.  I guess Backup/Restore does more than what my copying of files does?

Did you close MC before copying?  I ask because I use a synchronization programme that won't copy if the files are in use.

Yes, it was closed.

What I am really after is a way to duplicate the MC Library AND all application settings from one computer to another, including:  favorites, playlists, options, etc.

Can anyone tell if this is possible? And if so, what folders I should copy to have all settings/config/prefs duplicated?

Thanks.

Open a backup file with WinZip or similar, then you can check that you are copying all the correct files.  I think the default location is in C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Name]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Library Backups\

No what you are looking to do is not possible by simply copying files to another system.
Copy the MC library backup file to a different machine and import it.

If the paths are the same you'll be in business.
You'll have your playlists in any event.
Options do not restore, in my experience.
Like many apps, things get written into the registry.

Thanks for the replies.  It seems to me that being able to synch an MC library across computers is a missing feature.   You can't use client/server mode because when running MC as a client, you can't rate tracks and make changes.

What I'd like to be able to do is rate songs and make other changes to them (change genre, add comments, etc) on one computer, and have MC on the other computer *automatically* update the library based on the tag changes.  Now I have to do it manually using "Update Library (from Tags)" or "Import Media" with the "fix links" and "update library for external changes" options set.
