ATI HDTV Wonder Problem
« on: March 06, 2006, 11:03:46 am »

Hello.  I am moving to JRiver from MCE2005 and I am having some problems getting the TV application to work.  When I go to TV and click on options to set it up, I get a message that states "Failed to render video stream...check that no other applications are using the video capture device or any video windows open in Internet Explorer."  Nothing else is open besides MC.  I even tried to go back into MCE2005 and disable the TV Tuner thinking that it might be holding on to the capture device for scheduled recordings.   I also reinstalled the ATI software and drivers. This had no effect. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Does ATI Multimedia Center work, in particular the analog TV portion?

Go to Options, what do you see listed (and selected) in "Analog Video Devices" and "Digital TV Devices"?

I can't click on Options.  It says "Failed to start TV (unknown error).

Did you try a reboot after installing?

Yep.  I'm wiping it clean and re-installing everything now.

If you continue to have problem, try Tools Menu -> Options -> Playback -> TV Tuner -> Reset TV Settings.

Tried re-install and reset TV settings from the Options menu.  No luck.  TV in the ATI Multimedia Center works fine.  Any other ideas for me to try?

I also reinstalled the ATI software and drivers.

Did you dowload the latest from ATI? If not please try that.

Downloaded and installed latest from ATI for both HDTV Wonder and Catalyst (Radeon 9800).  Both ATI Multimedia Center and MCE2005 work fine for the TV application. Anything else I should try?

Please turn on logging for TV (Help -> Configure Debug Logging ... , check "Output to a log file", and check "TV" in the "Types of events to log:" list), then try reproducing the error and send me the log file.

I have added a work around in build 11.1.141.

Here is what the problem was -

ATI HDTV Wonder's analog driver seems to be very unstable. It stops working for no appearant reason. Some times such a problem can be temporarily solved by rebooting. Sometimes by reinstallation of ATI drivers. Many people may not even notice the problem because they only use the digital TV portion.

Media Center initializes both the analog and digital portions (or devices if you have separate analog device) so a user can use both. However it used to quit when it could not initialize the analog device properly. That was the problem rjhallow experienced.

Starting with version 11.1.141, MC ignores analog device failure if a digital device exists so that the user can continue to use the digital device.
