DVD navigation problems
« on: January 19, 2005, 11:36:38 pm »

Hi. I've struck a very frustrating problem in MC11 when watching dvds (in fullscreen). Occasionally, for certain disks, the arrow keys (mapped to my remote) fail to operate the menus. Sometimes it'll be ok on the root menu but then fail on subsequent menus. Sometimes it won't work at all and then for other dvds it will be fine. It seems like a focusing issue but clicking on the screen first doesn't help. Using the mouse appears to be ok also.

Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?

Thanks.

Ok. This is now beyond frustrating. Just threw in Metallica's "Some kind of monster" and I can't even get past the main menu.

Please... any ideas....?...

No idea.

Thanks  >:(

What about this... I noticed MC lists a filter in the dvd filter options called "DVD Navigator". What is this and could it be that this is the issue (corrupted, out of date etc...).

What other DVD software are you running?

I have CyberLink Power DVD. I noticed the exact same problem when I was using the bonus DVD that came with my Halo soundtrack. Since I don't normally use DVDs on my PC anymore, I cannot varify that this across the board.

It is my understanding MC uses an existing dvd decoder since it doesn't have one of its own.

You may want to try and see if you have the latest version of the other DVD software.

Just a thought. Good luck!

I have noticed this problem as well, but just in navigating sub menus. Arrow keys don't function as expected, but the mouse works fine.

THANKYOU!!!! Good to know I'm not the only one and YES, when the problem occurs, sub menus appear to be worse.

I'm using WinDVD codecs and have tried others so I don't think this is it. It's like some kind of focussing issue - MC seems to loose the ability to detect arrow keys for some menus.

Over to JR for some assistence - please???

I raised this issue this time last year and after finally updating to 11.1 the problem has not gone away.

It seems at least 1 in 3 DVDs played in MC will not allow menu navigation via the arrow keys making it impossible to use with a remote. I've updated video codecs, tried different PC's - nothing works!

What is the "DVD Navigator" filter listed in MC's DVD filter list? Does JRiver provide this? Could this be causing the issue and if so, do I need to update it? Versions???

Thanks in advance.

I've done some more testing... I use Intervideo WinDVD 6 codecs for DVD playback in MC so I thought I'd try the stand-alone WinDVD player to see if the problem occurs there - it does not! This must be an MC thing. What's also odd is while most dvds I've tried with this problem don't allow arrow key navigation at all, others will allow it intermittently. Ie, I'll be in the root menu and nav ok to a sub menu. When I leave the sub menu to return to the root it will fail.

JRiver, any chance of trying to replicate and resolve this?

Thanks

Try clicking on the display to give it the focus.  Then see if the arrows work. (they work for me with WinDVD filters)

Let us know what you find.  Thanks.

Thanks Matt. I've tried this but no luck. Clicking on a DVD menu item works, ie, takes you to another menu, but once you start using the arrow keys again it will eventually fail.

I mentioned it sounds like a focusing issue but it's probably not - unless this can apply to keyboard events only??

Also, you will need to try several DVDs (and naviagate back and forth thru the menus a little). It doesn't happen for all disks.

Please let me know if I can assist further.

Anytime the DVD window gets a keydown, it tries to navigate.

DVD navigation will show in the log like this:
"CDVDInterface::CursorMove"

Do you see these in the log as you press the directional keys? (after clicking somewhere on the DVD window to give it the focus)  If so, what are the return values? (0 is success, non-zero is an error)

Thanks.

Hi Matt. I do see these in the log (below) and all seem to have a return code of 0. However, I think I've worked out what might be happening!!!

The arrow keys are working. What's occuring though is that the on-screen DVD menu cursor is hidden! The enter key also works - taking me to whatever menu selection I've blindly navigated to.

I have a couple of PC's in the house both with MC loaded and both behave in a similar way with DVDs exhibiting this problem. Of the DVDs I own which work fine, I still noticed that some menus (when first loaded) also have no sign of the cursor anywhere on the screen but as soon as I arrow down or across, the cursor appears and I can see what I'm doing. For some reason, the cursor never re-appears when doing the same thing with certain other disks (or more precisely, their menus).

Perhaps MC is doing something behind the scenes which is inadvertently hiding the on-screen DVD menu cursor in some cases.

Hope this helps,

the "hide cursor when typing" option in the mouse settings wouldn't affect this would it?
