iPod Not Synching
« on: March 08, 2006, 12:53:16 pm »

I'm just starting to switch from iTunes to MC.  When I try to sync my ipod mini 6 GB, it looks like its synching properly in MC (I can see progress bars for files being loaded, etc.) but afterwards, there's absolutely nothing at all on the ipod.  It shows no albums, songs, etc.  If I try to connect it again to MC, MC tells me that the ipod has to be initialized.

I'm using 11.1.140.

Does anyone have suggestions?

First make sure that all iTunes processes are not running.  Look in the task manager for executable with the itune or ipod names.

then I would do a full restore of your iPod before syncing it, you can use the iPodupdater to do this.  This will clear the iPod completely and reset it back to factory.

then in MC initialize the iPod.

I just tried that, force-quitting the iTunes helper and iPod programs, then using MC to initialize the iPod and synch, and got the same result:  No content on the ipod.

Any other suggestions?

You mention that you initialized with MC and tried to re-sync....did you also try to restore using the iPod Updater like m1abrams mentioned?  If not, that is the first thing I would try.  Before connecting it to MC after the restore, I would also tell MC to redetect all handheld devices and start from scratch.

I had done the ipod restore last night; i didn't re-restore today after force-quitting the itunes helper apps.

It seems to me unlikely that the helper apps were actually implicated here.

P.S.: I just went into the ipod as a mounted hard drive, and MC _is_ writing the mp3 files.  It also appears to be writing the iPod control file (although it had a mod date of last night instead of this afternoon.

The iPod DB file, though is zero bytes.

Is that a clue?

(Actually, 104 bytes).

When you say IPOD DB...are you referring to the itunesDB file?  If this is 0 bytes, go ahead and delete and then re-initiallize with MC.  Restoring with the IPOD software should also correct this problem.

I did mean itunesDB.  After deleting, reinitializing, and synching again - it is now a 159 k file, but the iPod _still_ shows that it has no songs, albums, or playlists.

Just pushing this back up; I _still_ can't synch the iPod.

Download and use the iPod updater and run it.

Shutdown all the iTunes background processing.

Then initialize the iPod from MC and send one or two files.

Does that work?

Transferring 5 files in manual transfer mode did work.  When I switched to synchronizing playlists, however, it failed with the same result as before.

I'm wondering if part of this might not be that I have a bunch of mp3's rigged to cue files.  It occurs to me that JRiver might be trying to transfer the full 100-MB album mp3 when a song out of the cue comes up in the sync playlist; the iPod might then be filling up before JRiver realizes, leaving no space to write the database.  Just a thought...

Try synching a single playlist with no cue files involved.

That worked as well.

Is there a way I can tell a playlist not to use any songs from album mp3's with cue files?

Or (better) to tell JRiver to convert any such songs to an individual song mp3 when loading it to the iPod?
