Feature Requests - Replay Gain / Start and End Times Video
« on: March 19, 2006, 09:36:45 am »

Maybe there is a way to do this already, but if not... it would be great if there was some way to manipulate the replay gain of video. I get music videos from various sources and the volumes are all over the place depending on the source and quality of the recordings. Instead of editing the videos, it would be great if we could boost or cut the volume numerically in a field so that playlists could be created with normalized volumes.

Part two of this request:

Another nice feature would be the ability to input a start and end time for video. Lots of times, I get stuff with interesting informational preambles which I want to keep, but it doesn't flow in a playlist where I want continuous music.

That last request you gave with the start and end times in video was a brilliant idea. If MC had that ability, you could make playlists of common themes from a bunch of different types of media and mash them together :o to form something new.

Now, to make it even better... would be for MC to have the option to shut off the audio coming from a video so you could take the video portion of the music video and "overlay" it with a different soundtrack of your choosing... that would rock!

At the moment, I'm thinking of purely fun reasons for doing stuff like that but neverless, you could also do some useful things with it as well like you previously mentioned (skipping the non-flowing bits out of video files)

Start and end times would be useful for audio also. Seems like this would have to be a playlist item property in order to be the most flexible.

Yea, I agree. I wouldn't think this would be too hard to implement for the audio side.. but for the video side, you would have to take in consideration video files that split by chapter right? I mean, some video files can't be skipped around in MC because of their format (ASF comes to mind right away.)

The developers would have to work around these other types of files or at least have a way to detect them if a user tries to input an invalid playback range.

What stops you from making custom cue files with different playback ranges in those?

Time. But that is a good idea for audio. My main concern was actually for the first part which should be a little easier to implement and that was the ability to control the overall volume of a video playlist or being able to apply volume adjustments per video in a playlist. CD's recorded 20 years ago are barely audible compared to what is being recorded now and video is no different. It would be nice to incorporate some sort of replay gain in video audio as well. I realize this would probably only work while in MC and that is fine.

I was just playing around in iTunes last night and noticed that it lets you save start and end times on individual video files (didn't check it for audio but I imagine it's the same).

That would be really cool.

Actually it does everything I need but work in Media Center  ;). You can not only set the start / end times (and activate/deactivate) but you can adjust the volume of individual movies as well. Thanks for the heads up, Doof.
