Copy Files From External Drive to Internal Drive
« on: March 23, 2006, 06:49:20 am »

I am getting a new computer.  All my music files are on external drives.  I am moving these external drives to the new computer, but want to keep copies of all these files on internal drives of my old computer.  In other words, I want to copy all of Drive Q to Drive D.  What is the best way to do this?

The only way currently is to go into explorer and copy and paste.

I have been asking for a enhancement to Copy Disk location, so you can specify a folder structure for copying.
Currently when you use Copy disk file, it will put them all into 1 folder. So if you have a title that comes up twice, then it will over right.

I would recommend this:

1) Make a backup of your MC library (File > Library > Backup Library)

2) Reboot the PC without the external drive (or close MC and disconnect the drive if that is safe on your PC).

3) Start MC and inside MC select all files and use the Find and Replace tool for changing the file paths:
Tools > Library Tools > Find and Replace,  Tick only: Filename (path),  Find What: Q:\ ,  Replace: D:\
It will be fast because the files are not available and MC changes only the library items.

4) Close MC, connect the external drive (or reboot with the drive connected), select and copy the media folder(s) from Q:\ to D:\ with Windows Explorer. Make sure that the base path(s) is (are) identical on both drives.

Next time you start MC it will find the files on the D: drive.

That would be the long way around.... It would be much easier if they modified that copy function a bit.

That's the spirit, Gamer.  Taking it up a notch, I see.
