Playing CDA disk gets only static
« on: September 15, 2002, 03:21:28 pm »

Since I loaded new drivers for my cd player writer I can rip cda cds but still can't play them. Now I do get noise "static" when I play in digital format. Appears to play in nondigital but no sound whatsoever.
When I disable select cdrom volume and balance in my computer soundcard volume control the static disappears and I get only silence.
Mp3 disks play okay. Its not a big deal because I am ripping them to my maxtor to play but wonder if I can get some help solving this.

Sounds like what happened to me when another music app was running in the background --- like Real Player/Jukebox/One?
Check for that. I have external drives that work fine.

Read that post and tried what I could understand. Even got rid of real player basic but still the same problem.

Tried again to download and install new aspi. Maybe I am not doing it right.

I just corrected Zevele's link above.  4.71 is the current version.

Well I think I finally got aspi version 4.71 installed. But still nothing but static in digital playback and silence in analog.
Anymore suggestions?

DeerHunter,
I know that there are some differences between how Win98SE works and how WinME works but here are my settings (via 98). They work for me.

Start->Control Panel->Multimedia->CDMusic:
  • "Enable Digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM drive"

    .... Control Panel->System->Device Manager->(Expand "CDROM")->"Your CD-RW Drive Name here"->Properties->Settings:

    Disconnect = off
    Sync Data Transfer = off
    Auto Insert Notification = off
    DMA = on (if allowed)

    Back to Media Jukebox->Options->Playback:
    Direct Sound
    16 bit

    ...Options->Devices:

    "Use Digital playback" = off

    I hope this helps. It works for me (I said that already, didn't I?). Why, I have no idea. But after many tries at various combinations, this one was the most satisfactory ... not perfect, but satisfactory.

If you use analog playback you MUST have a cable connecting the CD drive to the sound card.

Also, double check the volume controls in Windows.

There's a Microsoft article about this drive. It probably isn't the problem but here's the link:

When you rip successfully, which mode are you using ("digital large buffer", "digital secure"?).

See if you can borrow a newer drive from a friend, just to see if it works.  If it does, replace your drive.  They don't cost much and they are simple to replace.

Thanks Jim H. I am planning on replacing my broken interior drive some day. Meantime just trying to see if the hp will play cds. Apparently it won't. No big deal as long as it rips.
