MC Crash when converting m4a to ape

When I try to convert m4a file to ape (or ogg vorbis), MC crashes and I get the following message:

Failed to play: "file location .m4u"
You may not have installed on your computer Direct Show Filters for decoding the type of file you are trying to play. Please install appropriate filters and try again.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Are your m4a files in Apple lossless format?

If they are Apple lossless files, please see this thread:

If they are not in Apple Lossless format, you need to install DirectShow filters that can handle m4a files.

Try downloading and installing FFDShow, and MP4 Splitter. See this thread (which links to another thread) for more info:
