If your m4a files are unprotected AAC files you can convert them if you have installed correct directshow filters for AAC playback. Check this thread for details:

I'm not really sure what an ACC file is, but the m4a file that iI want to convert is a music file.
I'd like to convert it so I can burn it to a CD, and also be able to play it in Media Center 10

The DirectShow filter system works only with MC11.1.

MC10 should be able to play m4a files if you have installed QuickTime. MC10 cannot burn m4a files to an audio CD, but here is a small freeware utility that can burn audio CDs from m4a files: http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4. Also, here is a freeware file converter that can convert unprotected m4a AAC files to mp3: http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net.
