Crashes on Importing
« on: April 08, 2006, 04:02:09 pm »

When I am importing, everything goes fine until the thumnails, then it gets to about 17,700 out of 18,000 and then it crashes. I have about 120 films and I think the problem is in those.

Import first without using the "Build missing thumbnails" advanced option.

Later on, when you browse the files MC builds the thumbnails on the fly (select the Thumbnail view option). Perhaps you can isolate the problem video files. It may be possible that MC cannot handle some video file formats without installing additional codecs.

I've tried importing with the 'Build Missing Thumbnails' disabled, but it's the exact same. The files import fine but when you go to view them, and they try to build the thumbnail, it just crashes. I've gone through my files, importing them one at a time. The music is fine but it's some of the films that are the problem. So far I've found about a dozen and when I import them into GSpot to analize them they are all MPEG files, which GSpot gives no information for. If the files are DivX or XviD there is no problem. This problem just started about three days ago, and the files that are giving me trouble are files that I've imported dozens of times before without any problem. I can double click on any of these files in Windows Explorer, or select File... Open Media File... and the film plays perfectly. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Media Center to no effect. You mentioned a 'Thumbnail View' Option but I can't find it. Is it something I can disable?

Do you have the ACE codec pack installed? I remember seeing the exact problem, and that was the culprit.... I'll try and find the post.

Actually, I did have the ACE CoDec Pack installed. My son installed it last week (I don't know why, I already have all the CoDecs that I need). I've just uninstalled it and everything is working perfectly. Thanks a lot, I owe you a pint or two.
