Improvements to Syncing
« on: April 15, 2006, 02:26:07 pm »

2 (probably minor) things that would be nice to have when syncing:

1. If a file has changed, e.g. you've changed the genre since the last sync, then instead of listing it as twice, once as to be deleted, once as in the queue, could it be listed once as "To be updated"?

2. Once the sync has been checked, could you display a panel saying for example:
Files to be Updated: 49
Files to be Deleted: 3
New Files: 342

Thanks :)

Actually, there's more that needs to be fixed. I keep noticing that around 100 files (random I think, but often including entire albums) get synced unnecessarily. They aren't even songs that I've listened to since the last sync. To test this, I did 'recheck sync', then synced, then did another 'recheck sync' immediately afterwards, without changing anything, and it listed 112 files to be synced.

I have an Archos Gmini XS202. Sync is set to 'Playlist' mode, which includes a smartlist that is every audio file.

Edit: I just did a 'Rebuild Database' on the mp3 player, and the problem still persists, except the number of files  that are being incorrectly synced has dropped to 8.

enervation - I notice the same thing, and I have a Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen XTRA. I keep a lot of my music (as much as I can get!) in MPC format, and I have Media Center convert it to MP3 before it uploads it to my MP3 player. I noticed that with some older versions, the conversion wouldn't work 100% (i.e. - some converted files, especially those with track number 10, would not have track numbers stored in the tags, and the album year wouldn't be in the tags either), so MC would constantly want to delete and reupload these songs. I had to manually delete them from my player (using the basic Creative software), then manually convert them with MC (Library Tools -> Convert Format), then manually upload them to my player (using Creative's basic software), and then MC would stop trying to resync them. I'm not sure where exactly the problem lies - whether it's MC not correctly setting the tags on converted formats, whether my player's database wasn't being correctly updated, or maybe it has something to do with MC not deleting the tracks before it reuploads them (i.e. - uploading the track, then deleting the newly uploaded copy, instead of the old one).

Speaking of that problem, I think MC should perform any of the "Delete on sync" operations before it does any uploading of tracks... but that's just my 2 cents.  :)

I think you've got a different problem to me, because I keep all my music in MP3 on the computer, and so MC doesn't do any converting when syncing.

enervation,

We think we've found out what's causing this. We'll get a build out later today with a fix. Thanks for the post.

Wonderful! Thanks :) I'll test it when it comes out and see if it fixes it.
