Podcast Download Problem
« on: April 19, 2006, 01:42:23 pm »

I'm having problems with auto download of podcast files..

I have my podcasts set to "auto download" both in"Downloaded Podcasts" as global setting and in each of my subscriptions. When new files show up in the feeds the downloading seems to pause at 0% downloaded and won't start downloading the new files until I highlight the feed title in the navigation tree on the left.. When I do that MC seems to kick into action and download the files.. But seemingly never on it's own.  ?

I deleted my podcast.xml file, and re-entered all my subscriptions to see if that might cure it, but that didn't work.. Has anybody else experienced this? Can anyone help?

I'm running version 11.1.172. The settings part of my podcast.xml are below, if that's of use..

Thanks!

Matt

Disk space?

Try renaming the podcast.xml and setting up again.

I have 40 GB free on this drive, so I think I'm OK for space.

I'll try re-creating the subscriptions again and I'll report back..

OK. I renamed podcast.xml.. and re-subscribed to a couple of feeds. Unfortunately, the downloads are still pausing at 0% until I click on the feed title.

Could it be a firewall problem or similar?

Here's an example:

I'm running MC on my laptop on my home network - connected to my DSL service via a DLink (DI-624+) router, but I don't have any content filtering or proxies enabled.

I tried running MC on my desktop (also behind the router) to see what would happen, and the podcast downloads happen normally..

I don't see why it's happening on one computer and not the other.  Very strange!! ?

It could be a setting.  A location that doesn't exist, for example.

It could be a virus checker or similar program.

Is it just one podcast feed?  Or any feed?

From what I can tell it seems to be affecting all feeds on the one computer.

Both PCs have the same antivirus app running (Eset NOD32).

Are there any settings I should look for?

Please start uninstalling software, beginning with the Virus checker.  It's probably the only way to find the problem if it isn't a configuration issue.

OK.. I removed NOD32, rebooted and ran MC again.. but it still did the same thing.

I've been meaning to do a fresh re-install of XP for a while, so I went ahead and did that over the weekend.. MC is still pausing at 0% downloaded for new podcast files until I open the feed's file list. This is both with and without NOD32 installed.

Is there anything else I should look at?

Can you give a couple examples of feeds that show this kind of behavior?

I tried installing your podcast.xml file, and it works fine for me.   Unfortnately it does not contain any subscribed feeds, so I must add one or more feeds before it starts to download.   Then they download fine.

I had a lot of trouble interpreting your bug report literally, but I think I know what the problem is.   I think you have not changed the "Download" option in "Podcast Feed Properties" to be something other than "Only Episodes I Select".   You get to this dialog by clicking on "Edit This Feed" at the top.

If you set this to "10 Newest Episodes" for example, then Media Center will automatically download the 10 newest episodes, and you won't need to click on "Download" to start the download.

Does that work for you?

I've learned a lot since my last post.   :-[

Turns out that we were not updating the episodes associated with a Podcast feed the first time we fetched it.    So for example if your episode fetch interval is 60 minutes, nothing would be updated for an hour, when the second (update) fetch occurred.   Then everything would update, as it should have.

However, if you were so wise as to display the feed, you would find it would then update immediately, and start downloading.

I searched the source history and discovered I broke this March 23.  The fix didn't make it into today's build, but it will be there tomorrow.
