Retrieving Default Media Center Menu
« on: May 02, 2006, 08:37:23 pm »

How do I get MC to give me the default Media Center menu with all of the shortcuts. Is it possible to do it without completely uninstalling and reinstalling Media Center?

Not sure what you mean.  What menu?  Where?

Just the standard shortcut menus.

By design, start menu shortcuts are only created on an initial install.  This is so that if you erase them, they stay gone after an upgrade instead of coming back with each build.

You'll either need to uninstall / reinstall or simply add some shortcuts to the start menu by hand.

That's something funky with the MC installer that I never quite understood. That it asks you questions once that it never asks again on subsequent installs.

Wouldn't it follow industry standards better to offer an Express install and a Custom install? In the Custom you could give us the option to create Start Menu items and the like?

Don't get me wrong... I love not having to click on a bunch of things just to get MC installed (and I LOVE the autoinstaller), but it is kind of a pain to have to uninstall MC and delete all the registry keys just to be able to turn autoinstall on at a later date (for instance).

You have the choice of Express vs Custom on the first install.

Later installs are simply an upgrade, and at this point asking questions like "where to install" and "what skin" aren't meaningful.

Build 181 that just went up changes this slightly.  You can now do a "Custom" install even during an upgrade to recreate shortcuts.
