I own a Nevo SL remote control device.  It is an IR unit that can use Wi-Fi to access UPnP music servers.  It seems to me that if MC and this unit could play nice it would be the perfect remote/access device for MC.  You could browse the library and control MC wirelessly using a color touch screen remote.  It supports zones, LAN, Wi-Fi, and IR.  It could replace the need for hardware like IRMAN, and netremote.

The problems are:

1. The UPnP is not playing nice with MC
2. It is $800

HOW ABOUT PARTNERING WITH NEVO? Fix the UPnP and offer a unique MC product that couldn't be touched without lots of hardware etc.

Well, I spoke to soon.  I spent hours last weekend trying to get some love between the nevo and MC.  With the update to 11.1 the UPnP lists nevo and it is able to find it in the listed servers!!  It is now sort of working.

ISSUES:

1.  The nevo looks for a media server (now recognized) and a media player (MC not recognized).  If I use the Nevo player as the player I am having partial luck.  It can browse my files and show titiles, but playback is spotty.  Certain tracks play without problems but some show multiple requests and sharing declarations in the UPnP log, but will not play.

2.  No cover art.

I am very pleased so far, and think this type of setup gives maximum flexibility for those of us looking for convergence.

By the way I have a Linksys Music Bridge that streams to my whole house amp and it works great.

Media Center does not act as a Media Renderer (in the UPnP sense).

Do you have conversion turned on? That might explain the tracks that are not playing...

All the music is MP3 but the converter was on.  I turned it off and will see if that improves the dead tracks.

How about cover art?  Any way to push that too?

3.  Why not make MC the renderer.  That would be ideal for viewing on big screen while surfing with the device.

I never got the cover art to come to my Nevo running on my HP Ipaq...

I found the Nevo stuff a little flakey overall...things like you say...playing a track stop when you go to the next track etc.

Often I would have to reset my Ipaq to get it going again (ie. Nevo would hang...)

I had a lot of hope for UPnP about a year ago.  That's all faded now.

Is seems that UPnP is going nowhere fast.  There haven't been any new prodicts released that are really worth talking about.  The ones out there provide basic functionality, but are nowhere near what could probably be done by a capable company.

I've pretty much abandoned any further efforts in the UPnP realm and am working on getting set up with NetRemote.  This is a very powerfull program and provides total flexibility in the user interface.  Problem is the learning curve is quite steep, at least for me.

I share your frustration with UPnP devices.  It's a great standard.  Microsoft has added a little confusion with their Media Center Extender protocol.

Yeah, I remember your questions and comments about a Linux box.  Good to hear it hasn't fallen off the table.

It would be great if MC could "push" content to this box as well as the box "pulling" from MC.  Pushing would allow the box to act as an extender to MC under control of NetRemote.  I suppose the pushing would not have to use UPnP (something like the Linksys WMB54G would be really cool), but that's probably complicating things more than you'd like. 

If you could push 24 bit audio and have a coax S/PDIF output I may even promise to buy two units when they're released.

Have a look here at the Twonkyvision site, it's a list of uPNP clients (some of which are software for Windows).

It may have something which you could use as a renderer.

I downloaded and had a play with the TwonkyVision server yesterday to check out my brothers' DLink DSM-320.

I certainly won't be in a hurry to replace MC's uPNP server with TwonkyServer.

Even using TwonkyServer with the DLink DSM-320 I don't see cover art.

As stated elsewhere, uPNP sounds like a great idea, but it's been a pit patchy in the way it gets implemented by various folks.
