I've got a smartlist that shows my 50 most popular songs, counting back by the number of times they've been played.

Simple.

What I'm looking for now is a way to generate a list of the artists I like the most.  I've looked over the database expressions page and can't find a method to do this.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this, if it is possible ?

I don't think this is possible. at least, not in the way that a record of [number plays] is kept, nor in a similar fashion to last.fm's "top artists" statistic.

Did you already try experimenting on a view scheme level, using panes along the lines of [artist] | [number plays] (grouped in tens perhaps?) | [number plays] with bi-directional enabled?

I threw a very quick one together and to be honest, it didn't get very close, I just don't have time right now to persue it further.
