OGG Encoder causes fatal exception
« on: September 16, 2002, 11:09:04 pm »

I've been using MJ to rip to WAV, then using Convert Format to convert the WAVs to OGG, rather than ripping directly to OGG.  Sometimes, maybe 20% of the time, in the middle of converting 10 or 20 files, I get an error (something about "winold").  When I click OK on the error dialog, I end up at a BSOD with the following error:

A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0167:BFF9DFFF.  The current application will be terminated.

I then have to hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE about 10 or 15 times to get my system to restart.  Once it is restarted, I go back to MJ, choose the remaining wavs and go to Convert Format. On the Convert Files dialog, I click on the Options button to check and make sure the correct OGG  encoding settings are still there.  I exit out of the encoding options and click Start on the Convert Files dialog and I end up crashing to BSOD again.  I have repeated this sequence of actions up to 6 times with the same results every time.  However, if I skip checking the encoding settings by clicking on Options and just click Start on the Convert Files dialog...no crash.  So, for some reason, looking at the Options dialog always seems to lead to a fatal exception in this situation.  I have been mostly converting to OGG, but also sometimes get this behavior when converting wav to MPC.

Please see the FAQ on ASPI.  Yours is not current.

Thanks.  The only mention of aspi I saw in the person related to NT/2000/XP.  I'm using 98SE.

I just went thru a whole apsi ordeal (again) when I uninstalled a demo version of Nero a couple of weeks ago.  The problem is that aspi 4.60 is the only version that seems to work on my system.  I have tried the up-to-date 4.71 several times, but it never works.  Any suggestions would be great.

Would aspi affect format conversions, though?  I'm ripping to wav and generally have no problems with that step of the process.  It's when I start converting the wavs (on my hard drive) to ogg that the errors crop up.  And, in certain situations, the crashes appear to be directly related to whether or not I access the Encoding options dialog before I start the conversion.

Happened again today.  Was encoding 10 WAVs to OGG.  I have the OGG encoder plug-in set to custom and using -q 6.  After encoding 9 of the WAVs, I received this error:

then I clicked OK and received this error:

I restarted the computer, opened MJ, located the remaing WAV, selected Convert Format, clicked on Options on the Convert Files dialog to check the encoder settings, closed the Conversion Settings options, clicked Start to start encoding, crashed to BSOD, received this error:

thats because you prob did not install it correctly, i made this mistake the first time i tried.

when you click on the install file, it does not inctall the ASPI, all it does is put it in a Dir On The C: Drive.

you Need To Go Into That Folder And Run The Install File, And Then Run The ASPI Check Program Inside To Make Sure.

Also Upgrade MJ

--------------------------

Download The Latest OGG Encoder.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've done that and ASPI check always tells me that it is not installed or configured correctly.  Again, is ASPI going to have any effect on the encoding step of the process.  I pretty much have no problems ripping to wav.

Also, according to the Plug-in Manager in my MJ installation I have OGG encoder 2.0.59.  I see on the Encoder Plug-ins page here on the site, the most recent version listed is 2.0.58.

I won't be upgrading to XP until I buy/build my next machine, which probably won't be for another year or so.  Using MJ for ripping and encoding kind of streamlined the whole process, but if all else fails, I can just go back to using EAC for ripping and WinVorbis or Oggifier for encoding.
