Where Otto Works Badly
« on: July 06, 2006, 12:27:07 pm »

Bit like light and dark, ying and yang....

Anyhow this morning my mate came round
and wanted to copy some files to his laptop.
I decided the easiest thing to do was to copy
them on to my Removable drive, unplug it
and plug it into his laptop.

While copying the files across I was saying how good this MC was
and brought MC up to show him.  Unfortunately by this time
Otto had discovered I had removed my removable drive
(Which contains all of my media files)
and promptly removed them from the library.
Pluging the drive back into the computer Otto attempted
to bring them all back again and promptly crashed.
MC now crashes after about 30 seconds every time i load it.
On top of this all the tags that are associated with my video
files disappeared since they weren't stored in the video files
themselves, and so my views fell to pieces.  (Good thing for the library backup)

Restoring the library solved the tagging problem,
but not the crashing problem.  I'm thinking it's to do with thumbnail regeneration.

On another note Thumbnail regeneration itself takes forever, and
would be sooo much nicer if it was possible to include the thumbnails in the library
backups!

For ref using build .31
Could we have an option in Otto not to remove files
simply because the drives disappeared  :)

Ugh, what a nightmare.

Especially this part:

I deal with this problem on a very frequent basis with my HTPC. Any changes I make on one library have to be made on the other due to this. I really wish the JRiver guys could figure out a way to store tags for non-taggable formats external to the library. I still haven't gotten around to playing with .mpl files that somebody mentioned to see if this would really take care of this problem or not...

No because the links aren't broken.  They're gone.
Otto Removed them!

I unchecked "Update for extrnal changes" renamed the folder that my music is in. and left it for a bit. It didn't remove any files.

Ah well I imagine if i had unticked that box before removing the drive that
probably would have caused the problem not to occur.  However
it wasn't something I was expecting.  Also I do want files updated
with external changes, but I dont want the removable drive removed
counted as files no longer existing.  I think that should be possible.

Use:
Fix broken links: "Yes (leave network files)"

Removable drives are included under the "network files" umbrella.
